Popovic Challenges Australia To Do Something Special In World Cup Knockouts

Australia reached the last 32 of World Cup 2026 after a tense 0-0 draw with Paraguay at San Francisco Bay Area Stadium, a result that followed a win over Turkiye and defeat to co-hosts United States, and head coach Tony Popovic immediately urged the squad to aim for something special in the knockout rounds.

The stalemate carried enough jeopardy to keep both sides cautious, yet Australia still advanced as group runners-up, while Paraguay moved to four points and sit in a strong position to progress among the eight best third-placed teams, leaving both camps focused on the next phase rather than the spectacle.

The contest will be remembered more for its numbers than its drama, as the match produced a combined expected goals figure of just 0.83, with Paraguay generating 0.25 and Australia 0.58, making it the first fixture at World Cup 2026 to finish with a total xG below 1.0.

Reflecting on the performance, Popovic defended Australia’s approach and believed his side had the upper hand for long spells, stating: “You can have opinions on how the game was played, or what we both thought we needed, but we at no stage felt that we were playing for a draw. I thought we controlled the game quite well, and were in control, and had the better opportunities.”

World Cup 2026: Paraguay progress and safety concerns

Paraguay’s route through the group has been more turbulent, with the draw against Australia and an earlier victory building on an opening defeat to the United States, and head coach Gustavo Alfaro praised the response, saying: “Recovering from such a hard result was really hard for us, and in spite of that, our team has been very solid in the past two games.”

Alfaro also raised a safety issue after Julio Enciso collided with the advertising boards while duelling with Alessandro Circati, with Enciso slow to rise, and the coach argued for extra room around the pitch, saying: “I think that maybe if there was more space that will be good because of course there’s a lot of intensity when we are playing, and sometimes if a player gets destabilised, he could fall and get injured and these things can happen. So, maybe we have to think about that and reassess.”
