Asian Games Hockey: India Thrash Bangladesh 10-0, Set Up Pakistan Semi-Final

Defending champions India signed off their Asian Games 2026 group-stage campaign in emphatic fashion, thrashing Bangladesh 10-0 in a rain-hit Pool A encounter on Monday. Captain Harmanpreet Singh led the charge with a hat-trick as India finished top of the group and set up a semi-final clash against Pakistan.

India were relentless despite difficult playing conditions, with Abhishek, Jugraj Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Sanjay and Mandeep Singh also finding the net. The victory took India’s goal difference to an imposing +45 after five wins from five matches.

Harmanpreet Singh leads India’s Asian Games goal rush

India made their intentions clear almost immediately, opening the scoring in the third minute through Abhishek.

Sanjay played a key role in the build-up, finding Abhishek inside the Bangladesh circle. The forward created enough space before unleashing his trademark reverse hit past the goalkeeper to put India ahead.

Bangladesh did create an opportunity from a penalty corner in the 12th minute, but Suraj Karkera was equal to Amirul Islam’s drag-flick. India were also denied another penalty corner shortly afterwards when Bangladesh successfully overturned the decision through a video referral.

The defending champions continued to dominate possession and territory, but had to wait until the second quarter to extend their advantage.

Jugraj and Harmanpreet punish Bangladesh

Heavy rain intensified at the start of the second quarter, leaving the pitch increasingly waterlogged and making quick ball movement difficult.

India nevertheless doubled their lead in the 22nd minute. Mandeep Singh was brought down inside the circle and India were awarded a penalty corner, with Jugraj Singh’s drag-flick striking the foot of a Bangladesh defender on the post.

The decision was upgraded to a penalty stroke and Jugraj made no mistake, calmly converting to make it 2-0.

India continued to apply pressure and created another opening in the 27th minute. An aerial ball into the circle found Mandeep, who cleverly worked his way into a position to win another penalty corner.

Harmanpreet took charge and fired a powerful drag-flick past the Bangladesh defence to give India a 3-0 lead at half-time.

India turn the screw after the break

The floodgates opened in the second half.

Dilpreet Singh and Sukhjeet Singh combined with quick passing in the 32nd minute to carve open the Bangladesh defence. With the goalkeeper beaten, Sukhjeet had the simple task of guiding the ball into an open net for India’s fourth.

Harmanpreet then added his second of the evening in the 40th minute after Vivek Sagar Prasad helped create another penalty corner. The Indian captain’s powerful flick found the net as the lead grew to 5-0.

Shilanand Lakra joined the scoring spree soon after, striking twice in quick succession in the 44th and 45th minutes.

By then, Bangladesh were struggling to contain an Indian side that continued to attack despite the outcome being effectively settled.

Harmanpreet completes hat-trick

Harmanpreet completed his hat-trick during India’s late onslaught, adding further gloss to an already dominant performance.

Sanjay and Mandeep Singh also got on the scoresheet as India eventually reached double figures, completing a 10-0 victory.

The result underlined India’s dominance throughout the group stage. They defeated Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Japan, South Korea and Bangladesh to finish unbeaten at the top of Pool A, scoring heavily throughout the campaign.

India face Pakistan in semi-final

India’s reward for topping the group is a semi-final against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 1.

The other last-four encounter will see Malaysia face South Korea.

With two days to recover before the semi-finals, India will now turn their attention to the knockout stage as they look to defend their Asian Games title and continue their pursuit of another gold medal.
