Asian Games:44 Years Later, Sawan Barwal Brings India A Marathon Medal

Sawan Barwal has etched his name into Indian athletics history, winning the silver medal in the men’s marathon at the Asian Games 2026 in Japan and ending India’s 44-year wait for a marathon medal at the continental showpiece.

Barwal produced a stunning run to clock 2:11:37, securing the silver and once again rewriting the national record books. The performance marked another landmark moment in what has already been a remarkable year for the Indian long-distance runner.

The Himachal Pradesh athlete had entered the Asian Games after making headlines earlier this year by breaking a national record that had stood for nearly five decades.

In April, Barwal clocked 2:11:58 at the Rotterdam Marathon, becoming the first Indian to run under 2 hours 12 minutes and breaking Shivnath Singh’s 48-year-old national record.

Now, just months later, he has added an Asian Games medal to that achievement.

Barwal’s silver is India’s first men’s marathon medal at the Asian Games since 1982 and only the country’s fourth individual men’s marathon medal in the history of the continental Games.

Barwal has now ended that long wait with a historic medal in Japan, making him the first Indian men’s marathon medallist at the Asian Games outside India.

Barwal’s journey to the Asian Games podium has been remarkably quick.

The Army runner from Mandi, Himachal Pradesh, had primarily built his reputation in half marathons, 5000m and 10,000m races before transitioning to the marathon. His debut over the distance in Rotterdam immediately suggested that he could compete at the highest level.

His 2:11:58 in Rotterdam erased Shivnath Singh’s long-standing national record. In Japan, Barwal went even faster, producing another national-record performance of 2:11:37.

In the space of a few months, the 26-year-old has gone from breaking one of India’s oldest athletics records to winning an Asian Games medal.

Barwal finished behind Japan’s Ichitaka Yamashita, who claimed the gold medal on home soil.

The 29-year-old Japanese runner became the seventh Japanese athlete to win the men’s marathon gold at the Asian Games and the first Japanese champion to achieve the feat in front of a home crowd.

For Barwal, however, the silver represents much more than a podium finish.

It marks India’s return to the Asian Games marathon medal table after 44 years and provides another significant milestone in the career of an athlete who has rapidly established himself among the country’s leading distance runners.

First came the national record. Then came the Asian Games medal.
