Beyond Gaming: How GEPL Is Building a New E-Cricket Sporting Category?

Esports is often associated with battle royales, MOBAs and first-person shooters, but the Global Esports Premier League (GEPL) is taking a markedly different route by building its competitive ecosystem around cricket.

Played on mobile cricket simulation game Real Cricket, GEPL aims to bring together cricket, gaming and esports in a format that prioritises skill and competitive integrity over chance. Real Cricket has crossed 400 million lifetime downloads and is widely recognised as one of the leading cricket simulation titles on mobile.

Unlike arcade-style sports games, the platform emphasizes core cricketing skills such as shot selection, reading field placements, bowling variations and assessing match situations. GEPL translates those elements of the sport into a digital competitive environment.

The league’s third season has also adopted a structured pathway designed to mirror the progression of a traditional sporting competition. Open qualifiers begin with a single-elimination, best-of-one format, with the field eventually reduced to 208 players.
Those qualifiers then join 42 returning players from Season 2 in a 250-player Swiss-format phase. The leading players from that pool move towards the franchise auction before the start of the main season.

GEPL describes its model around four interconnected pillars, Cricket, Gaming, Esports and Entertainment, with the league seeking to position itself beyond conventional gaming tournaments and closer to a new digital sporting category.

Accessibility is another key component of the league’s proposition. Unlike esports titles that can require high-end gaming PCs, consoles or specialised infrastructure, GEPL can be played on a smartphone, allowing players from across India to compete without needing expensive equipment.

That accessibility has coincided with a sharp rise in participation. Registrations reportedly increased more than fourfold, from around 200,000 in Season 1 to more than 910,000 in Season 2.

For GEPL, that growth underlines the potential of mobile gaming to widen access to competitive cricket, particularly in a country where pursuing the traditional sport at an elite level can require significant investment in coaching, facilities and opportunities.
With its cricket-centric identity, mobile-first approach and structured competitive pathway, GEPL is attempting to carve out a distinct space at the intersection of cricket and esports.
