Prime Video’s Chaar Yaar took the audience on a roller coaster ride filled with drama, emotions, thrill and excitement. As the web series earned praise from all corners for blending friendship with drama and action, Filmibeat got in touch with the captain of the ship for a detailed and fun-filled interview.

In an exclusive conversation with Filmibeat Assistant Editor Abhishek Ranjit over a Zoom audio call, director Vinay Waikul opened up about the inspiration behind Prime Video’s Chaar Yaar, the casting process, working with Poorav Jha, extensive research into the criminal world and the possibility of revisiting the characters in the future.
Vinay Waikul Reveals How His College Friendships Inspired Chaar Yaar
Talking about the original idea behind Chaar Yaar, the ace director revealed that the story emerged from his and the writers’ personal experiences of friendship.
He said, “The idea came from our own experiences. I don’t mean to say that we were going and robbing cars, but the kind of friendship we had experienced in our college days and formative years. We, along with our writers Sambit and Saurabh, always felt that this was something we hadn’t seen on screen for a really long time. We wanted to relive that emotion and experience.”
The filmmaker further revealed that the four central characters were inspired by his own friend circle.
“Categorically, if I speak about myself, we were these four friends who were always there for each other. We are still very close friends. These characters are sort of based on those four friends, including me. So, it was quite a personal journey for me as well,” he added.
How Money And Changing Middle-Class Aspirations Shaped Chaar Yaar
One of the interesting aspects of Chaar Yaar is how the desire for a better life gradually pushes the four friends towards questionable decisions. Vinay explained how India’s changing economic landscape became an important part of the narrative.
He spoke about the economic changes that followed the liberalisation of the Indian economy in the 1990s and how access to money started changing middle-class aspirations and family dynamics.
“Money was becoming God in those days. Once you commit to the emotion that money is accessible and you can get it, then the means don’t matter. If it’s not through the right approach, then the approach doesn’t matter. We felt this was a very significant societal change that needed to be highlighted and underlined, so that somewhere people could have a little introspection,” he quipped.
Vinay Waikul On Balancing Crime, Humour And Friendship In Chaar Yaar
Despite being rooted in crime and thriller elements, Chaar Yaar also makes room for humour and lighter moments. When asked how he maintained the balance between tension and entertainment, Vinay said that instinct played a significant role in the creative process.
“For me, instinct is the most important thing. If something entertains me, then there will be a section of the audience that will also get entertained. I think of myself as an audience member and try to understand what I would love to see on screen,” he explained.
The Broken News director further added that while the series touches upon deeper societal themes, the primary intention was to entertain viewers and make them enjoy the journey of the four friends.
Is Chaar Yaar Season 2 On The Cards?
I am mighty invested in the four friends and their journey; so, I asked Vinay if there was possibility of another instalment. Will he like to revisit the world of Chaar Yaar with season 2?
Vinay expressed enthusiasm and said, “I would love to. All of us would love to go back to this world and have fun with it. It would be interesting to see these characters going through this experience, having their own learnings by now and figuring out how they will move forward and what they will do.”
While the filmmaker did not confirm a second season, he dropped a hint at the possibility of another journey with the four friends.
