Charles Leclerc Monaco Brake Nightmare Takes New Twist as Brake Supplier Respond

Charles Leclerc’s miserable Monaco Grand Prix weekend has taken another dramatic turn after Ferrari brake supplier Brembo publicly responded to the Monegasque driver’s criticism following his race-ending crash.

Leclerc was left frustrated after crashing at the final corner during Sunday’s race, blaming severe brake issues that he claimed made the Ferrari “impossible” to drive.

The Ferrari driver painted a grim picture of the situation, revealing that three of his four brakes had effectively stopped working after a Safety Car period.

“I had three brakes not working,” Leclerc said after the race. “The only thing I can do is not brake for the last corner, but in an F1 car not braking in the last corner ends up in the wall anyway.”

The seven-time Grand Prix winner went even further, describing the situation as “not acceptable” and comparing the sensation to driving a car without brake callipers installed.

However, those comments have now prompted an unusual public response from Brembo.

Brembo rejects Charles Leclerc conclusions

In a strongly-worded statement released after the race, Brembo said it was “really surprised” by Leclerc’s remarks and insisted it was far too early to determine the root cause of the incident.

“At present, the company does not know the causes of the issues experienced by Charles Leclerc and therefore considers it premature to draw definitive technical conclusions before the available data has been analysed,” the statement read.

The Italian manufacturer stressed that telemetry data and technical investigations would be required before responsibility could be assigned.

“In cases such as this, it is necessary to examine the telemetry data together with the team’s engineers in order to accurately determine the origin of the incident.”

The statement was notable given Brembo’s long-standing relationship with Ferrari, a partnership that has spanned more than five decades across multiple motorsport categories.

Brembo also reminded observers of its status as Formula 1’s dominant brake supplier, providing braking technologies across the entire grid.

Charles Leclerc set to follow Hamilton’s setup

While Ferrari investigates the issue, Leclerc has already revealed he plans to switch to teammate Lewis Hamilton’s brake configuration from the next race weekend.

“The only thing I can say is that we have the solution in-house, and I’ll go to Lewis’s configuration from the next race onwards,” Leclerc explained.

The admission suggests Ferrari believes the problem may not be entirely related to the hardware itself, but potentially to setup choices and operating parameters.

Leclerc also accepted partial responsibility for not making the switch earlier.

“I didn’t really want to change this weekend,” he admitted. “Maybe I am to blame in a way because I thought on a track like Monaco it was good to start with brakes that I knew.”

Ferrari facing fresh questions

The public disagreement leaves Ferrari facing uncomfortable questions heading into the next race weekend.

While Leclerc remains convinced the problem was obvious, Brembo’s statement suggests the supplier is unwilling to accept blame before a full technical investigation has been completed.

With championship contenders Mercedes continuing to pull away and Ferrari still searching for their first victory of the season, the last thing the Scuderia needed was a public dispute involving one of its most trusted technical partners.

Now attention will turn to Ferrari’s data analysis as the team attempts to determine whether Leclerc’s Monaco nightmare was caused by a brake failure, a setup issue, or something else entirely.
