Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted about his international retirement in a subtle way ahead of Portugal’s World Cup 2026 Round of 16 clash against Spain.
As the FIFA World Cup 2026 unfolds in North America, speculation surrounding Cristiano Ronaldo’s international future has reached a fever pitch. The Portuguese legend, now 41, has repeatedly hinted that this tournament will mark the end of his record-breaking chapter with the national team.

Ronaldo told CNN in late 2025 that the 2026 World Cup would “definitely” be his last, citing his age and the physical demands of elite football. His sister, Kátia Aveiro, recently echoed this sentiment, calling the competition his “last dance” and urging fans to enjoy it while it lasts.
Ronaldo himself has remained measured during the tournament. After Portugal’s Round of 16 victory over Croatia, he stated, “I don’t make reckless decisions. I will decide after the tournament, not now.”
And ahead of the Spain match, Ronaldo has given the latest notion, which all but suggests that this World Cup will be his final dance.
“I’ll quit when I want to, not when others want me to. I always get asked the same questions; I want to focus on other things, on playing well,” Ronaldo said to Diario AS.
Cristiano Ronaldo recognized an Argentine by the Looks?
The Al Nassr talisman also spoke about his memories as a player and shared the story of meeting an Argentine steward, whom he recognised instantly, as per his own words.
“What stays with you is the people, the people who love you. I share hotels with the staff, and those are spectacular memories. Yesterday on the flight, there was an Argentine flight attendant. I knew she was Argentine by the way she looked at me. “I knew you were Argentine by the way you looked at me,” I told her. If you look away quickly, it means you don’t like Cristiano (laughs). I want to enjoy what will be my last World Cup to the fullest; hopefully, tomorrow won’t be my last match. That way, you can kill me a little more,” he added.
His club contract with Al-Nassr runs until June 2027, suggesting he may continue at club level for a short period post-World Cup.
