Croatia Edge Panama 1-0 As Budimir Comes Off Bench To Seal World Cup Win

Croatia stayed in World Cup contention with a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama, secured by substitute Ante Budimir. The striker struck early in the second half, earning Croatia three crucial points in Group L. The result left Panama out of the tournament, while Croatia kept qualification hopes alive and marked Luka Modric’s 200th international appearance.

Earlier on the same matchday, England drew 0-0 with Ghana, which increased the pressure on Croatia. Zlatko Dalic’s team knew only a win would keep progress in their own hands before facing Ghana. The three points moved Croatia to three points in Group L, while Thomas Christiansen’s Panama could no longer reach the knockout rounds.

Panama began with greater energy, pressing high and limiting Croatia’s rhythm during the first half. Dalic reacted at half-time, sending on Andrej Kramaric and Budimir to refresh the front line. The change soon paid off. Nine minutes after the restart, Josip Stanisic broke free on the right, released by a neat Marco Pasalic backheel. Stanisic’s low cross reached Budimir inside the six-yard box, and the substitute finished from close range for the decisive goal.

Croatia nearly extended the lead shortly afterwards, again through intelligent movement behind Panama’s defence. Modric lifted a precise pass over the top for Pasalic, who tried to chip Mosquera but saw the attempt blocked. The ball rebounded kindly, yet Pasalic snatched at the follow-up and fired over from a tight angle, leaving the game finely balanced entering the final half hour.

Panama responded with sustained pressure after falling behind and forced Livakovic into several key interventions. Murillo twice tested the goalkeeper in quick succession from the right side, but both efforts were beaten away. From a set-piece routine, Carlos Harvey met a corner with a firm header, only for Livakovic to tip over. That was Panama’s best chance, and Croatia protected the 1-0 advantage to the whistle.

Croatia produced six shots for an expected goals figure of 1.66, while Panama managed eight attempts worth 0.62 xG. Budimir’s contribution also carried historic weight for Croatian football at this tournament. The forward became only the fourth player to score for Croatia as a substitute at a World Cup. He followed Bruno Petkovic and Lovro Majer, who both netted from the bench in 2022, and Ivica Olic, whose impact came 24 years earlier.

At 34 years and 336 days, Budimir set a new record as Croatia’s oldest World Cup goalscorer. The previous mark belonged to Olic, who scored against Cameroon in 2014 at 34 years and 277 days. This latest strike underlined how Dalic continues to rely on experienced figures during high-pressure moments on the global stage.

Modric also reached a landmark, earning a 200th cap for Croatia during the victory in Toronto. Since Modric’s World Cup debut in 2006, only Cristiano Ronaldo, with 23 games, and Lionel Messi, with 27, have appeared more often at the tournament than Modric’s 21 matches. The midfielder will aim to add further appearances while guiding Croatia through Group L.

Croatia leave the Panama match with three points, new records and areas to refine before facing Ghana. The side showed resilience in defence, highlighted by Livakovic’s saves, and took one key chance through Budimir.
