CSK Coach for IPL 2027: McCullum, Hussey or Morkel to Replace Fleming?

Chennai Super Kings are preparing for life after Stephen Fleming, with the franchise set to appoint an overseas coach ahead of IPL 2027.

CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that the franchise is considering overseas candidates to replace Fleming, who ended his 18-year association with the five-time IPL champions after taking up the England Test head coach role. The final decision is expected to be made after consultations with captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and former skipper MS Dhoni.

Several names have emerged in the race, with Brendon McCullum, Mike Hussey and Albie Morkel among the candidates being discussed.

CSK turn to overseas experience after Fleming’s exit

Fleming’s departure marks the end of one of the longest and most successful coaching partnerships in franchise cricket.

The New Zealander took charge of CSK in 2009 and helped establish a culture built around stability, clear roles and continuity. During his tenure, the franchise won five IPL titles and became one of the most successful teams in the competition.

CSK are now looking for an overseas coach who can preserve some of that identity while also helping the team move into a new phase.

“We have spoken to the interested candidates, and we will sit down to finalise a name,” Kasi Viswanathan was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.

The new head coach is also expected to have a say in CSK’s recruitment and squad-building plans ahead of IPL 2027.

Brendon McCullum brings a completely different approach

Brendon McCullum is one of the biggest names linked with the position.

The former New Zealand captain already has an association with CSK as a former player and has subsequently established himself as one of the most recognisable coaches in world cricket.

McCullum previously coached Kolkata Knight Riders in the IPL before moving into international coaching. His appointment would represent a significant change from the Fleming era.

Where Fleming’s CSK were traditionally associated with calculated cricket and consistency, McCullum’s coaching philosophy has generally been built around aggression, attacking intent and giving players the freedom to take risks.

That could appeal to CSK after three difficult seasons.

McCullum’s availability, however, could be a major stumbling block. He is currently England’s white-ball coach, meaning CSK would have to work around his existing international commitments if they wanted to bring him back into the IPL.

Mike Hussey offers the most natural succession

Mike Hussey could provide the smoothest transition from the Fleming era.

Hussey has been part of the CSK setup for years, having represented the franchise as a player before becoming its batting coach in 2018. He therefore knows the organisation, players and coaching structure extremely well.

His coaching credentials have also expanded beyond CSK.

Hussey is currently head coach of Welsh Fire in The Hundred and previously worked with England during their successful 2022 T20 World Cup campaign.

His familiarity with Fleming’s methods could make him an attractive option for a franchise that has traditionally placed enormous value on continuity.

There is, however, competition for his services.

Fleming has reportedly approached Hussey about joining his England Test coaching staff, meaning CSK may have to convince one of their longest-serving coaching figures to remain with the franchise.

Albie Morkel offers continuity with a fresh perspective

Albie Morkel is another prominent name in the discussion.

The former South Africa all-rounder has a deep connection with CSK, having played a key role in the franchise’s early success and been part of the teams that won the IPL titles in 2010 and 2011.

Morkel has now moved into senior coaching and was recently appointed head coach of Joburg Super Kings, CSK’s sister franchise in the SA20.

That appointment could make him an intriguing candidate for the IPL job.

He already understands the Super Kings ecosystem and has experience working within the franchise’s wider structure. At the same time, he would bring a younger coaching voice to a team entering a period of transition.

The obvious question is experience.

Morkel’s senior head-coaching résumé is still developing, meaning CSK would be backing his potential rather than choosing the most experienced coach available.

Why the overseas route makes sense

CSK’s preference for an overseas coach is understandable given the extraordinary success they enjoyed under Fleming.

The franchise has traditionally avoided unnecessary changes to its core structure. Fleming’s 18-year tenure was built around maintaining a consistent philosophy, and appointing another overseas coach could help retain that stability.

But the circumstances are different now.

CSK have struggled in recent seasons and need to evolve rather than simply replicate what worked in the past.

The franchise finished last in IPL 2025 after winning only four of their 14 league matches, while the end of Fleming’s tenure has now opened the door for a broader rethink of the team’s approach.

That makes the coaching appointment particularly important.

MS Dhoni and Ruturaj set to play key roles

MS Dhoni is expected to have significant influence over the decision, given his long association with CSK and his central role in the franchise’s success.

Ruturaj Gaikwad is also expected to be consulted as the team’s current captain.

The involvement of both could be important because CSK are attempting to balance continuity with transition.

Dhoni represents the franchise’s most successful era, while Gaikwad is expected to lead the team into its next phase.

The new coach will therefore have to work with both the established CSK culture and a younger leadership structure.

CSK’s next coach could define the post-Fleming era

Replacing Fleming was never going to be a straightforward appointment.

The New Zealander spent 18 years building CSK into one of the most successful teams in T20 cricket, winning five IPL titles and creating a coaching culture that became synonymous with the franchise.

The question now is whether CSK want to preserve that model or deliberately move away from it.

Hussey represents the strongest continuity option. Morkel offers familiarity with a younger coaching profile, while McCullum could bring the biggest tactical and cultural change.

With the new coach also expected to influence CSK’s squad-building plans ahead of IPL 2027, the decision could have consequences well beyond the dugout.

CSK are not simply choosing Fleming’s replacement. They are choosing the person who will help define the franchise’s next era.
