Glasgow, July 29: Gulveer Singh etched his name into Indian athletics history by becoming the first Indian man ever to win a medal in the men’s 10,000m at the Commonwealth Games, claiming a memorable silver in Glasgow on Tuesday.

Competing in his Commonwealth Games debut, the national record holder produced another outstanding distance-running performance, clocking 27:49.78 to finish second behind Australia’s Ky Robinson, who won gold in 27:48.93. The Isle of Man’s David Mullarkey took bronze in 27:50.28, with less than two seconds separating the three medallists in a thrilling finish.

The silver medal marks yet another milestone in Gulveer’s remarkable rise over the last two years. Already regarded as one of Asia’s finest distance runners, the Uttar Pradesh athlete added another historic achievement to a career that has been built on consistently breaking barriers for Indian athletics.

The Indian Army’s naib subedar paced his race brilliantly on a cold and rainy evening at Scotstoun Stadium and kept his composure to prevail over some of the reputated names in this discipline.

His medal is particularly significant because no Indian had ever finished on the podium in the men’s 10,000m in Commonwealth Games history. Gulveer has now changed that narrative, delivering one of India’s finest long-distance performances on one of the sport’s biggest stages.

The result continues an extraordinary phase in Gulveer’s career. He holds the Indian national record in the 10,000m (27:00.22), set earlier in 2025, and has also rewritten the national marks over 3,000m, 5,000m and the half marathon, establishing himself as India’s premier distance runner.

The Commonwealth Games silver further strengthens his credentials ahead of the Asian Games later this year, where he will be among India’s leading medal hopes in distance running.
