CWG 2026: Lovlina Borgohain Appeals for Help as Assam Floods Weigh on Her Mind Ahead of Semifinal

Glasgow, July 29: Olympic bronze medallist Lovlina Borgohain has revealed that the devastating floods in her home state of Assam have made it difficult for her to fully focus on her Commonwealth Games campaign, as she appealed to people across the country to extend support to those affected by the disaster.

The 28-year-old boxer, who has already assured India of at least a bronze medal after receiving a direct entry into the women’s 75kg semifinals, shared an emotional message on social media expressing her concern for flood-hit families back home.

“I am feeling very bad that a lot of people have lost their lives because of the flood in Assam. A lot of people are facing a lot of problems at this time,” Lovlina said in a video message posted on her social media handle.

‘I Am Not Able to Focus Properly’

The Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist admitted that the situation in Assam has been constantly on her mind even as she prepares for one of the biggest competitions of the year.

“A lot of people have lost their homes and everything has been washed away. At this time, people are not getting food, water, clothes and other necessities,” she added further.

Lovlina said the plight of the flood victims has affected her mentally during the Games. “I am not able to focus properly here because of the condition of my people. I am trying to do my best.”

Despite being thousands of kilometres away in Glasgow, the Assamese boxer said she has been following the relief efforts closely.

Appeal to Help Flood Victims

Lovlina praised the efforts of volunteers, local residents and the government in reaching out to those affected, while urging more people to come forward.

“Our people are working hard to deliver the necessities to the people. The government is also doing its best. A lot of people from Assam are also coming out to help them.”

She concluded with an appeal for wider support.

“I need everyone to reach out to the people and help them. I request everyone to help us reach out to the people and deliver the necessities to them.”

Medal Assured in Glasgow

While her thoughts remain with Assam, Lovlina has also made an encouraging start to her Commonwealth Games campaign.

The former world champion advanced directly to the women’s 75kg semifinals because of a five-boxer draw, ensuring India of at least a bronze medal.

Earlier in the Games, Lovlina had said the guaranteed podium finish had taken away the pressure and allowed her to focus solely on chasing the gold medal.

The boxer had also credited a training camp in Belfast for boosting her confidence ahead of the Games.

Floods Continue to Ravage Assam

According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), floods have claimed 68 lives in the state so far this year.

The floods have affected 445,495 people across six districts – Sivasagar, Golaghat, Charaideo, Jorhat, Nagaon and Kamrup (Metropolitan) – leaving thousands displaced and in urgent need of food, drinking water, clothing and other essentials.

Even as she prepares for her semifinal bout in Glasgow, Lovlina’s thoughts remain firmly with the people of Assam, hoping her appeal will encourage more support for those rebuilding their lives after the devastating floods.
