Glasgow, July 31: Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Tharanga Pathirage confirmed his emergence as one of world athletics’ brightest new stars by scripting history at the Commonwealth Games 2026, winning the men’s javelin throw gold with a commanding effort of 89.75m.

In doing so, the 23-year-old rising athlete delivered Sri Lanka’s first-ever athletics gold medal in Commonwealth Games history, while defeating two of the sport’s biggest names – India’s Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra and Pakistan’s reigning Olympic champion Arshad Nadeem.

The final also produced an unprecedented all-Asian podium. Chopra settled for silver with a season’s best throw of 85.83m, while fellow Indian Yash Vir Singh produced the performance of his life, launching a personal best 85.41m with his final attempt to snatch bronze.

For Sri Lanka, it was another landmark moment in athletics after the nation’s growing success on the international circuit, with Pathirage proving that his sensational Diamond League season was no flash in the pan.

Rumesh Pathirage’s Golden Season Continues

The Glasgow triumph was the latest chapter in an extraordinary 2026 campaign for the Sri Lankan.

Coming into the Commonwealth Games, Pathirage was already the only 90-metre thrower in the world this season, having produced a stunning 92.62m effort at the Rome Diamond League in June. He also won Diamond League titles in Rome and Doha while consistently throwing beyond 88 metres throughout the season.

Unlike several of his rivals who struggled for rhythm, Pathirage looked composed from the outset. After opening with a foul, he unleashed 89.75m in his second attempt, a throw that ultimately proved unbeatable despite four subsequent fouls.

The victory underlined why many now consider him the favourite heading into the Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya later this year, where another blockbuster showdown with Chopra is expected.

Neeraj Shows Signs of Recovery, But Gold Remains Elusive

For Neeraj Chopra, the silver medal marked an encouraging yet incomplete comeback.

The two-time Olympic medallist returned to the Commonwealth Games for the first time since winning gold at the 2018 Gold Coast Games, having missed Birmingham 2022 because of injury.

The Indian star entered Glasgow after a difficult season, having delayed his competitive return due to a persistent lower back injury. His only major outing before the Games came at the Doha Diamond League in June, where he finished fourth with 85.69m.

In Glasgow, Chopra improved marginally, producing a season’s best 85.83m with his second throw after opening with 80.97m. However, he could not build on that effort, registering throws of 81.29m and 80.73m before fouling his final two attempts.

While the silver represents a step forward after months of rehabilitation, Chopra is still searching for the consistency that made him Olympic and world champion.

More importantly, Friday’s result reinforced the scale of the challenge awaiting him later this season. With Pathirage consistently throwing close to the 90-metre mark, the Sri Lankan appears set to become Chopra’s biggest rival at the Asian Games 2026.

Yash Vir Singh Delivers the Biggest Surprise

If Pathirage’s victory was expected given his recent form, the biggest surprise of the evening belonged to Yash Vir Singh.

The young Indian had quietly built momentum through consistent performances this season but few predicted he would leave Glasgow with a Commonwealth medal.

After opening with a foul, Yashvir steadily improved before saving his best for last. His sixth-round throw of 85.41m, a personal best, vaulted him onto the podium and completed India’s remarkable one-two finish.

It was a significant breakthrough for the youngster, who outperformed compatriot Rohit Yadav, India’s season leader entering the Games.

Rohit Yadav Fails to Capitalise

Rohit had arrived in Glasgow carrying strong medal expectations after throwing 87.05m at the Inter-State Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar earlier this year, making him India’s leading performer of the season.

However, the 25-year-old never found his rhythm in the final. His best effort of 81.56m came in the second round, leaving him seventh overall despite entering the competition as one of the favourites for a podium finish. He finished behind Grenada’s Anderson Peters and Trinidad and Tobago’s Keshorn Walcott while falling well short of his season’s best.

It marked another frustrating Commonwealth Games outing for Rohit after finishing sixth in Birmingham four years ago.

Arshad Nadeem Endures Another Disappointing Evening

Pakistan’s Arshad Nadeem, who stunned the world with Olympic gold in Paris, endured another disappointing competition.

The defending Commonwealth champion managed only 77.41m, finishing ninth after struggling throughout the evening. His campaign mirrored an underwhelming 2026 season in which he has failed to rediscover his best form.

His performance contrasted sharply with Pathirage’s consistency, underlining the shift in momentum within Asian men’s javelin.
