CWG Glasgow 2026: Asmita Dey scripts History for India with Gold in Judo

Asmita Dey has scripted history with a Gold Medal for India in the Women’s 48kg Judo in Glasgow Commonwealth Games on Friday (July 31).

The Tripura-born Indian Judoka became the first Indian in history to snatch a Gold medal at the event with an enthralling performance.

In the final, she faced Canada’s Heidi Quach and showcased a stunning display. The Indian judoka trailed the match early, but then rallied back with a point to level the scores. Quach huffed and puffed while Asmita also came close to a winner, but the time ran out as the final went to Golden Score.

Known for her technical skills, determination, and composure under pressure, Asmita has shown the ability to fight back in close contests and execute decisive scores in golden score situations.

Making her Commonwealth Games debut in Glasgow, Asmita delivered a strong campaign in the women’s -48 kg on 31 July 2026. She secured an ippon victory over Scotland’s Eva Ewing in the quarter-finals and then produced a gritty performance in the semi-final against Scotland’s Summer Shaw. After a tightly contested bout that went into golden score, she won by yuko (1-0) after more than six minutes, guaranteeing at least a silver medal. And then in the final, she has emerged victorious to secure the Gold for India.

Still only 23, Asmita Dey has Olympic aspirations and continues to progress on the World Ranking List through consistent international exposure. As a product of Khelo India and SAI systems, she exemplifies how grassroots talent from smaller states like Tripura can rise to the global stage with proper support.
