The spotlight on the track fell first on the one-lap final, where Vishal TK became the first Indian athlete to run a sub-45-second 400m on Indian soil, while field and combined events also saw history as decathlete Tejaswin Shankar crossed the 8000-point barrier for the first time by an Indian.

Vishal TK, representing Tamil Nadu, claimed the men’s 400m gold in 44.98 seconds, bettering the national mark of 45.12 seconds set in Chennai last year and rewriting the meet record in the process, a run that came only minutes after the men’s 100m final had delivered another national record.

Reflecting on preparations for breaking the 45-second barrier, Vishal TK explained the mental build-up behind the race and said the performance had not come as a surprise, adding, “I was confident of breaking 45 seconds today,” after earlier noting, “Athletics fans will certainly keep a track of me when I compete at the global level.”

Tejaswin Shankar’s decathlon milestone adds to Ranchi athletics results

Away from the sprints, the combined events produced a landmark moment as Tejaswin Shankar entered the 8000 points club, scoring 8057 points in the decathlon to win gold, surpassing the national record of 7947 points achieved in March and going past the Glasgow Commonwealth Games qualification standard of 7787 points.

Tejaswin Shankar’s decathlon series, held alongside the track finals, ensured that the Ranchi competition delivered a complete range of notable performances, with the multi-event mark adding depth to a day otherwise dominated by sprint headlines.

Gurvindervir Singh’s 100m record leads men’s Ranchi athletics results

The men’s 100m final had earlier set the tone when 25-year-old Gurvindervir Singh, running for Reliance and hailing from Punjab, clocked 10.09 seconds to reclaim the national title, improving on the previous national and meet record of 10.18 seconds that had been credited to Animesh Kujur in 2025.

Gurvindervir Singh’s winning time also cleared the Glasgow Commonwealth Games qualifying mark of 10.16 seconds, building on the 10.17 seconds run in the semi-finals on Friday, and the sprinter framed the performance as personal confirmation of competitive strength, saying, “This record is to prove that I’m not finished and still have power in my legs,” after the race.

Coach James Hillier, assessing the 100m champion’s development, highlighted improvements beyond the stopwatch and suggested there is further progress to come, stating, “He is learning to execute the plans in the races and his performance graph is getting better,” while also indicating expectations of stronger results in the next few months.

Defending record-holder Animesh Kujur of Odisha, who had clocked 10.15 seconds in the second semi-final on Friday, finished second in the final with 10.20 seconds, while Reliance sprinter Pranav Pramod completed the men’s 100m podium in 10.29 seconds during an evening session that kept producing strong sprint times.

The men’s 400m podium behind Vishal TK’s 44.98 seconds featured Tamil Nadu athlete Rajesh Ramesh taking silver in 45.31 seconds and Uttar Pradesh’s Jay Kumar securing bronze with 45.47 seconds, closing a highly competitive quarter-mile final that underlined India’s depth in the event.

In the decathlon standings behind gold medallist Tejaswin Shankar’s 8057 points, Thowfeeq N of NCOE Trivandrum earned silver with 7530 points, while Navy athlete Gokul KR collected 7157 points for bronze, as all three navigated ten disciplines over two days at Birsa Munda Stadium.

The Ranchi meet therefore produced national records in men’s 100m, 400m, decathlon and women’s pole vault and triple jump, with several Glasgow Commonwealth Games qualifying marks also achieved, underlining the current strength of Indian athletics across sprint, combined and field events.
