Hamilton Secures First Ferrari Victory At Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton claimed a landmark first victory for Ferrari at the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, ending a 40-race drought and cutting Kimi Antonelli’s championship lead. Antonelli retired late with a technical problem, turning a tight strategic contest into a major points swing in the Drivers’ standings.

The race delivered an all-British podium as George Russell finished second for Mercedes and Lando Norris took third for McLaren. Antonelli passed Russell for P2 with five laps left, yet the Mercedes stopped on the following lap, costing Antonelli a sixth straight win and any chance to defend the lead on track.

Hamilton’s win rested on a bold three-stop approach and perfect timing during a virtual safety car. Fernando Alonso’s Aston Martin stopped on track, triggering the VSC period that allowed Hamilton to pit and stay ahead. That move left Mercedes unable to respond on pure pace, keeping Hamilton clear of the late Russell–Antonelli fight.

Before Antonelli’s retirement, Russell had started from pole but lost the lead to Hamilton around mid-race. Norris held close to the Mercedes pair for most of the afternoon, yet Hamilton’s strategy placed Ferrari out of reach. The Ferrari avoided intense tyre battles in the closing laps and controlled the pace to the flag.

Since triumphing in Belgium in 2024 with Mercedes, Hamilton had not won in 40 races. The Barcelona success became Hamilton’s 106th Formula One victory and ended the second-longest barren spell of the career. Hamilton now sits 41 points behind Antonelli in the Drivers’ standings, keeping Ferrari firmly in the championship conversation.

Hamilton also set several milestones at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Ferrari driver is now the most successful winner at Montmelo with seven victories, moving ahead of Michael Schumacher’s six. Hamilton further extended the record for most podiums at the track, standing alone with 13 top-three finishes at the Spanish venue.

The Barcelona race produced the first all-British Formula One podium since the 1983 San Marino Grand Prix. Hamilton stood on the rostrum alongside compatriots Russell and Norris, underlining a strong day for British drivers. Hamilton achieved this at 41 years old, making Hamilton the seventh-oldest winner in Formula One history.

Russell’s second place brought a welcome result in a mixed 2026 campaign. The Mercedes driver secured only a third podium of the season, helped by Antonelli’s retirement. Norris finished third after tracking both Mercedes cars for much of the race, while also managing tyres to stay safely clear of the chasing pack.

Behind the British trio, Max Verstappen finished fourth for Red Bull, splitting the two McLarens. Oscar Piastri crossed the line in fifth after a quieter race, securing solid points. Isack Hadjar followed in sixth for Red Bull, while Alpine claimed seventh and eighth through Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto after a consistent afternoon.

Racing Bulls placed both cars inside the top ten, with Liam Lawson ninth and Arvid Lindblad tenth. Their double-points finish contrasted with another difficult outing for Charles Leclerc. The Ferrari driver failed to reach the chequered flag again, adding further frustration to a season already hampered by reliability and missed scoring chances.
