Fatima Sana is set to become the first Pakistan cricketer to play in the women’s Hundred after Birmingham Phoenix picked her in the 2026 wildcard draft. The Pakistan captain has taken the franchise’s fourth overseas slot, giving the tournament a notable cross-border storyline in a season already shaped by new private ownership and closer scrutiny of player recruitment.

As per an ESPNCricinfo report, the all-rounder replaces Australian left-arm quick Lucy Hamilton, who was withdrawn by Cricket Australia for workload management. Sana has been signed on the women’s wildcard minimum salary of £15,000, approximately 5.6 million Pakistani rupees. Her full participation, however, could depend on Pakistan’s tour of Sri Lanka, scheduled from July 23 to August 4.

The timing of the signing is difficult to miss. Sana was outstanding at Edgbaston, Birmingham Phoenix’s home ground, in Pakistan’s narrow defeat to South Africa. Batting at No. 8, she made an unbeaten 55 from 38 balls before taking 3 for 16 with the ball. South Africa eventually won by two wickets, but Sana’s performance reinforced her value in short-format cricket.

For Birmingham Phoenix, Sana offers more than an overseas replacement. She is a seam-bowling all-rounder who can contribute in difficult phases of a T20 innings. James Thomas, Birmingham Phoenix’s performance director, described the move as a significant one for the franchise. “Signing Fatima Sana is a real statement of intent,” he said. “She is Pakistan’s captain, an international-class pace bowler and a brilliant replacement for Lucy Hamilton, who is unavailable due to her Australia commitments.”

Sana’s leadership role with Pakistan also matters in a competition where overseas players are expected to adjust quickly. The Hundred’s format, with 100 balls per innings and tactical bowling blocks, demands fast decision-making. Players who understand pressure moments usually settle better, especially when squads are assembled from several domestic and international systems.

Her possible limited availability remains the key caveat. The Hundred runs from July 21 to August 16, overlapping with Pakistan’s Sri Lanka tour. If national duty affects her window, Birmingham Phoenix may have to manage her appearances carefully. Pakistan presence in the Hundred grows after wildcard draft

Sana is the third Pakistan player with a Hundred contract for the upcoming season. Birmingham Phoenix also have Usman Tariq in the men’s competition, while mystery spinner Abrar Ahmed was bought by Sunrisers Leeds for £190,000 in the March auction. Abrar’s signing had already eased concerns that Pakistan players could be overlooked under the league’s new investment structure.

The issue drew attention because several Hundred franchises now have Indian-linked private investors. Given the absence of Pakistan players from the Indian Premier League since the first IPL season, any pattern of non-selection would have invited questions. The presence of Sana, Abrar and Tariq gives the 2026 Hundred a broader South Asian player footprint.

For women’s cricket in Pakistan, Sana’s move carries symbolic value. Pakistan players have had fewer regular opportunities in major overseas leagues than counterparts from Australia, England, India, South Africa or New Zealand. A Hundred contract does not solve that gap on its own, but it provides visibility in a league with strong broadcast reach and competitive squads.

The wildcard draft completed both men’s and women’s squads, with each franchise adding two men and two women on minimum salaries. In the women’s draft, Scotland openers Darcey Carter and Katherine Fraser also earned contracts. Carter was picked by Sunrisers Leeds, while Fraser joined Southern Brave.
