ICC Test Rankings: Joe Root, Matt Henry Go No.1 as Shubman Gill Climbs ODI Charts

England and New Zealand’s ICC World Test Championship match at The Oval has caused major changes in the ICC Men’s Test Player Rankings, with Matt Henry and Joe Root moving to the top. Henry joined Jasprit Bumrah at No.1 among Test bowlers, while Root returned as the top Test batter.

Henry took 11 wickets in the second Test against England and helped New Zealand level the three-match World Test Championship series 1-1. The 34-year-old became only the third New Zealander to top the Test bowling list, after Jack Cowie in 1947 and Richard Hadlee from 1984 to 1990.

Henry ends long wait for New Zealand

Henry’s 870 rating points have only been bettered by two New Zealand players. Hadlee reached 909 in 1985, while former captain Kane Williamson peaked at 919 points for Test batters in 2021. Bumrah had led the bowling rankings alone since passing Kagiso Rabada in November 2024.

Root regained the No.1 Test batting spot after scoring 46 and 77 in England’s 253-run loss in London. The Yorkshire right-hander moved up two places to overtake teammate Harry Brook and Australia’s Travis Head, taking the top spot for the 12th time in his career.

Changes across the Test rankings

Brook and Root have both held No.1 in recent times. The pair have swapped the top place six times in the past 18 months, after Root first passed Williamson. New Zealand batters also advanced after their biggest-ever win in England.

There were also changes in the white-ball rankings after India’s ODI series against Afghanistan and Australia’s T20I series against Bangladesh. Shubman Gill rose three places to second among ODI batters, while Ishan Kishan moved up 21 spots to equal 43rd, and Hashmatullah Shahidi climbed four places to 52nd.

India’s ODI bowlers also improved, with Arshdeep Singh up 16 places to 22nd, Prasidh Krishna up 34 to equal 58th, and Washington Sundar up 17 to joint 71st. In T20Is, Mitch Marsh rose to ninth among batters, and Nathan Ellis moved to seventh among bowlers after Australia’s 3-0 series sweep in Bangladesh.

Bangladesh still had some gains, with Towhid Hridoy up to 30th and Saif Hassan to equal 35th among T20I batters, while Nasum Ahmed rose 27 places to 11th among T20I bowlers.
