India’s convincing win in the Galle Test against Sri Lanka was significant not only for the result but also for what it revealed about the changing face of the country’s Test batting unit.
With several established names no longer part of the touring party, KL Rahul has suddenly found himself as the senior-most batter in the group, carrying the experience of 69 Tests into a dressing room increasingly filled with young and inexperienced players.

KL Rahul credits India’s Cricketing System
That responsibility was evident throughout the Test. Rahul spent 175 deliveries at the crease and played a key role in India’s first-innings effort before severe cramps forced him to retire hurt. And after the match, he credited India’s cricketing ecosystem, as Rahul believes India’s younger batters are benefiting from a system that exposes them to international conditions before they are thrust into Test cricket.
“I think a lot of credit goes to how our first-class setup is done and how some of these guys are in the India A structure for the last few years. The teams are touring to countries that we’re going to play in a couple of months before,” Rahul said after the match.
“Once you put players in those positions and give them the exposure and the experience that they need at that level, I feel like that really helps them understand what they need to do when they come into the national team and they’re better prepared and give themselves a better chance to do well at this level,” he added.
His own experience now places him in a different position. Rahul is no longer simply one of India’s senior batters; he is increasingly becoming a bridge between two generations.
“It’s not like you play Ranji Trophy cricket and go straight into an Indian team and a Test match in a couple of months time. That difference is huge, the standard from there to here is a big jump so then sometimes the players are found wanting and they need to figure their game at the international level,” Rahul opined.
After a convincing win in the first Test, India will be aiming to continue their merry run and seal the series in Colombo, and as always, Rahul will be paramount for the Indian batting unit.
