India A vs New Zealand: Bumrah, Pant, Rahul Eye Red-Ball Prep

India are set to use their A team tour of New Zealand as more than a developmental exercise, with several established Test players expected to feature in the red-ball fixtures as the selectors look to give them early exposure to local conditions.

According to TOI, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul are among the senior players expected to feature in at least one India A game, while other Test regulars including Devdutt Padikkal and Sai Sudharsan could also be involved. The move underlines India’s emphasis on acclimatising key players to New Zealand conditions before the two-match Test series begins.

The India A series starts on October 24, overlapping with India’s T20I and ODI assignments on the tour. That scheduling has left the selectors with a delicate balancing act, but red-ball preparation for the Test group is understood to be a priority.

Why Are India’s Test Stars Being Sent With India A?

The decision to involve established Test players in an A team series represents a significant shift from the traditional purpose of such tours.

Rather than using India A solely as a pathway for emerging players, the selectors are looking to use the fixtures as an extended preparation camp for members of the Test squad. With the A games taking place in New Zealand before the Test series, senior players can gain valuable exposure to the conditions and pitches they will encounter later in the tour.

Bumrah’s potential involvement is particularly notable. The fast bowler rarely needs an A team assignment when fully fit, making the possibility of sending him to New Zealand early an indication of the importance being placed on workload and preparation.

The selectors are also deliberating over Bumrah’s readiness, with the team management keen for him to increase his workload before joining the Test squad for the Wellington Test.

Bumrah’s Early Exposure Could Be Crucial

For India, Bumrah’s preparation carries added importance because of the demands placed on their fast-bowling group.

The selectors are currently considering Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Akash Deep and Auqib Nabi for the Test series. The first four currently appear to be ahead in the pecking order, although the final combination will depend heavily on fitness and availability.

Prasidh’s fitness has already influenced the selection process. The senior selection meeting was postponed because the selectors were awaiting his fitness reports, highlighting the importance of having clarity over India’s pace resources before finalising the squads.

In that context, giving Bumrah additional red-ball workload before the Test series becomes particularly significant.

Akash Deep is also expected to play some India A matches as the selectors seek to ensure he is fully prepared for the two Tests. Mukesh Kumar, meanwhile, has returned to consideration after his performance in the Irani Cup and is likely to be part of the A squad.

KL Rahul Faces A Different Kind of Preparation

For KL Rahul, the India A assignment could serve a dual purpose.

Rahul is expected to be part of India’s ODI squad, meaning the overlap between the A series and the white-ball fixtures creates an unusual scheduling possibility. There is a strong chance he could play the first India A fixture on October 24 before joining the ODI squad in Auckland.

That would allow Rahul to transition directly from a red-ball game into the ODI leg of the tour, while also giving him early exposure to New Zealand conditions.

The arrangement reflects the selectors’ attempt to manage players across formats without compromising Test preparation.

Rishabh Pant Also Expected to Play

Rishabh Pant is another major Test regular expected to use the A series as part of his preparation.

Pant is currently playing only Tests, according to the report, and is expected to complete his preparations by appearing in at least one India A fixture.

His involvement would give India one of their most important Test players an opportunity to experience match conditions in New Zealand before the senior Test squad begins its campaign.

Ishan Kishan had also been under consideration for the A series as part of plans to keep him prepared for the longest format. However, the overlap with India’s ODIs and T20Is could lead the selectors to turn instead to Dhruv Jurel and Kumar Kushagra.

Some India A Bowlers Could Stay Back in New Zealand

The preparation could extend beyond the senior players themselves.

Some of the fast bowlers selected for India A could be asked to remain in New Zealand after their A assignment to assist the Test team with preparations. The approach has a precedent in India’s recent planning, with spinners Harsh Dubey, Tanush Kotian, Vipraj Nigam and Shivang Kumar having accompanied the Test team in Sri Lanka.

This time, the selectors could use the A tour to identify fast bowlers who can provide additional support to the Test group once their own fixtures are complete.

That would give the senior team a larger pool of bowlers to work with while also exposing India’s next generation of quicks to the conditions.

India’s Test Spin Combination Still Unclear

The fast-bowling selection may be complicated by fitness, but there is also a decision to make over India’s spin options.

Washington Sundar’s return to full fitness means Saransh Jain is unlikely to be considered, while Ravindra Jadeja is expected to retain his place in the Test XI.

The remaining question is whether India carry Manav Suthar and Kuldeep Yadav alongside them. The report suggests it is unlikely all four spinners will travel, with Kuldeep potentially vulnerable because of the team’s emphasis on batting depth.

There is also a possibility that Nitish Kumar Reddy could be preferred to carrying multiple spin-bowling all-rounders, giving the team another seam-bowling option while strengthening the lower order.

ODI Squad Will Also Feel the Impact

The use of Test regulars in the A series could have consequences for India’s ODI squad as well.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, Dhruv Jurel and Nitish Kumar Reddy could all be unavailable for at least part of the ODI assignment because of their Test preparations.

That would open opportunities for players who have performed consistently in domestic and A-team cricket.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Kumar Kushagra and Naman Dhir remain in contention, while Mayank Yadav is another player to watch after improving his workload and showing an ability to maintain his pace over longer spells.

India Use India A as a Test Preparation Tool

The New Zealand tour therefore presents an unusual selection challenge, with India’s senior teams and A side effectively operating as interconnected groups rather than completely separate squads.

The priority is clear: India’s Test regulars need meaningful exposure to New Zealand conditions before the two-match series. Having Bumrah, Pant, Rahul and other established players participate in A fixtures allows the management to build that preparation into the tour itself.

For a team seeking to maximise its chances in demanding overseas conditions, India A is being used for something more ambitious than developing the next generation. It is becoming part of the Test team’s preparation plan.
