India’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign begins with a blockbuster clash against Pakistan, but former India coach and JioStar expert Abhishek Nayar believes Harmanpreet Kaur’s side must already have one eye on the bigger picture.
Speaking on JioStar’s ‘Game Plan’ ahead of India’s tournament opener, Nayar stressed the importance of dominating the group stage and avoiding a scenario where qualification depends on the final matches against Bangladesh and Australia.

“India have to keep the weather in mind. Playing in England, rain is always a factor. Matches can be shortened or washed out,” Nayar said.
“So, they can’t just aim to win. They have to win by big margins. Net run rate could decide who goes through.”
With England’s conditions often bringing unpredictable weather into the equation, Nayar believes India should focus on securing commanding victories early in the tournament.
“You want to enter the last two group games, against Bangladesh and Australia, with qualification already almost secured. You don’t want to go into those matches needing a win to qualify.”
New-Ball Impact And Powerplay Aggression Key To India’s Plans
While much of the spotlight naturally falls on experienced stars like Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana and Jemimah Rodrigues, Nayar identified three players he believes could prove decisive in India’s World Cup campaign.
Leading that list is young pacer Kranti Goud, who is expected to take the new ball in English conditions.
“Kranti’s role with the new ball is critical,” Nayar explained.
“In England, the ball will swing and seam early on, so making the most of the powerplay is vital.”
He also highlighted left-arm spinner Shree Charani as a crucial figure in India’s bowling attack, particularly during the middle overs.
“She takes wickets in the middle overs and keeps the run rate down. These two bowlers add great value to the team.”
Among the batters, Nayar pointed to Shafali Verma as the player capable of setting the tone during the Powerplay.
“Shafali needs to fire. She has to go hard so that Smriti Mandhana can take her time to settle in and then take charge later.”
India Enter As Team To Beat
Having ended their ICC trophy drought by winning the Women’s ODI World Cup last year, India arrive at the T20 World Cup carrying the tag of favourites.
Rather than viewing that as a burden, Nayar believes the pressure is greater on Pakistan.
“In women’s cricket, India is far ahead in skill and team strength,” he said.
“India walk in as the favourites and that is how everyone sees them.”
He also pointed to the Women’s Premier League as a major reason behind India’s improved ability to handle high-pressure situations.
“There was a time when they couldn’t. But now, this team is equipped with the talent and the mindset to handle that pressure and live up to the tag of being favourites.”
Why Smriti Mandhana Could Hold The Key
Nayar reserved special praise for vice-captain Smriti Mandhana, describing her as the batter opposition teams fear most.
“In any tournament, the opposition’s biggest worry is how to dismiss Smriti Mandhana. If they don’t, she can hurt them badly.”
The left-hander’s versatility, according to Nayar, makes her one of the most complete batters in the women’s game.
“She plays square of the wicket on both sides. She can hit straight down the ground. She uses her feet well against spinners and finds different areas of the field.”
“The longer she bats, the harder she becomes to bowl to. Once she is set, she hurts the opposition when it matters most.”
With India beginning their campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan, the challenge will be balancing immediate success with the long-term goal of lifting a maiden Women’s T20 World Cup trophy.
And if Nayar’s blueprint is followed, India will hope qualification is already secured before their final group-stage showdown against Australia even arrives.
