Indian Golf’s Young Brigade Set for R&A Amateur Championships in Scotland

Indian amateur golf will be put through a demanding international test this week as four of the country’s promising young golfers tee off at the prestigious R&A Amateur Championships across two links courses in Scotland from Monday.

Harjai Milkha Singh and Ishnidh Singh Virdi will lead India’s challenge in the boys’ competition, while Guntas Kaur Sandhu and Rashi Mishra will compete for honours in the girls’ event. The quartet has been selected by the Indian Golf Union (IGU) and will be accompanied by team managers Deepinder Singh Kullar and Saaniya Sharma.

The opening two rounds of both championships will be played in strokeplay, with the field then reduced to 64 players for the matchplay stages.

The R&A Boys’ Amateur Championship, first held in 1921, remains one of the most distinguished events on the junior golfing calendar. The championship has produced a remarkable roll of honour, with former winners including José María Olazábal, Sergio Garcia, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Tom Lewis and David Howell. The eventual champion will earn exemptions into The Amateur Championship and Final Qualifying for The Open.

This year’s boys’ field features 144 players from more than 30 countries across Europe, the Middle East and the USA. The competition will be staged at Glasgow Gailes Links on Scotland’s west coast.

Harjai, 16, arrives in Scotland as the No. 1-ranked player on the IGU All India Junior Order of Merit. He also comes into the championship with confidence after finishing runner-up at the APGC Junior Championship last month.

The teenager is embracing the demanding conditions rather than viewing them as an obstacle.

“It’s a typical Scottish weather out here – windy and rainy at the same time. These are the experiences which you want early in your career if you want to grow into a good professional.”

With the conditions expected to make low scoring difficult, Harjai intends to remain focused on his game plan.

“It’s a strong field and it will be challenging to post under-par scores each day. My target will be to focus on my process and keep things simple.”

For Ishnidh, the Scottish assignment represents a first experience of playing at Gailes Links. The 17-year-old Bengaluru-based golfer is ranked second in the IGU All India Junior Order of Merit and has specifically worked on his ball flight to prepare for the windy conditions.

“This is my first time in Scotland. My entire preparation has been about my golf flight as the conditions over here are windy and even rains.”

The girls’ championship carries an equally prestigious pedigree. First played in 1919, the R&A Girls’ Amateur Championship has featured several future major champions and Solheim Cup stars among its winners, including Anna Nordqvist, Suzann Pettersen, Azahara Munoz and Georgia Hall.

The winner will receive exemptions into the Women’s Amateur Championship, US Girls’ Junior Championship and Final Qualifying for the AIG Women’s Open, besides earning an invitation to the Augusta National Women’s Amateur Championship.

A 144-player international field will compete at Edinburgh’s Craigielaw Golf Course on Scotland’s east coast.

For Guntas Kaur Sandhu, the championship is familiar territory. The 16-year-old is returning for her second appearance and knows that managing the unpredictable Scottish conditions will be crucial.

“The weather is tricky here – it rains anytime and then there are strong winds so keeping the ball in play will be my biggest target.”

Rashi Mishra, meanwhile, is making her debut. The 17-year-old sees the tournament as an opportunity to measure herself against a strong international field while gaining experience that could prove valuable in her development towards professional golf.

“The kind of field you get to play against besides the course conditions and weather is very precious for me as it helps build confidence.”
