The conventional advice is to pair an oversized shirt with well-tailored trousers, but the relationship between the two silhouettes matters more than following a formula. Straight-leg denim, gently tapered trousers and relaxed chinos are all reliable options because they provide room without creating excessive volume. Wider trousers can work equally well, provided the shirt is slightly shorter or the waist is defined. Think of the outfit as a composition: if one element is generous, another should provide structure, length or a clearer line. But whatever you do, don’t pair an oversized shirt with skinny jeans as that can throw off the balance.
Use the tuck strategically
How you handle the hem can completely alter the shirt’s character. Leaving it untucked emphasises its relaxed quality and works particularly well with denim, shorts or casual trousers. A full tuck creates more structure and is especially effective with higher-waisted tailoring, allowing the trousers to establish a stronger silhouette. Partial tucks require the most restraint. Instead of forcing large amounts of fabric into the waistband, tuck only enough to suggest shape and let the rest fall naturally.
Layer to add definition
An oversized shirt becomes versatile when treated as a layering piece. Wear it open over a fitted T-shirt or vest to create contrast between the outer and inner layers, or place it beneath a more structured jacket for an interesting play on volume. The key is ensuring that each layer performs a different function. If everything is loose, the outfit can lose definition; if the underlayer is too tight, the contrast can feel overly deliberate. Aim instead for subtle variation in shape and texture.
