Jamshedpur FC: Tata Steel Agrees Rs 100 Transfer to Churchill Brothers

Jamshedpur FC are set for a change of ownership after Tata Steel agreed to transfer its entire stake in the Indian Super League club to Churchill Brothers for a token Rs 100, potentially allowing the Goan side to take over their place in India’s top flight.

The proposed deal includes Jamshedpur FC’s ISL sporting licence, 12 player contracts, and two coaches’ contracts. However, the takeover is still subject to approval from the All India Football Federation (AIFF), with the transaction expected to be completed by August 31.

Tata Steel transfer brings Jamshedpur FC ownership era to an end

Tata Steel’s Committee of Directors approved the transfer of all 4.08 crore equity shares in Jamshedpur Football and Sporting Private Limited (JFSPL) on August 14, with a share purchase agreement signed the same day.

The move formally ends Tata Steel’s ownership of the club after the company announced earlier this month that it would withdraw Jamshedpur FC from the ISL and redirect its focus towards grassroots and youth development.

The proposed transfer allows the football operation to continue under new ownership, rather than shutting down the club’s first-team operations.

Tata Steel had been involved in professional football through Jamshedpur FC for more than a decade. The club also won the ISL League Winners’ Shield in the 2021-22 season under Owen Coyle.

Churchill Brothers could return to the ISL

For Churchill Brothers, the deal could provide a route back into the ISL after a turbulent period for the historic Goan club.

Churchill finished top of the 2024-25 I-League standings and were initially awarded the championship, but a dispute over points and eligibility decisions eventually reached the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

CAS ruled in Inter Kashi’s favour, restoring their points and handing them the I-League title. Churchill Brothers consequently lost the automatic promotion opportunity.

The Goan club later sought entry into the ISL but faced opposition from existing clubs and the AIFF. Their bid was rejected, while Churchill subsequently dropped into I-League 2 after opting out of the 2025-26 I-League.

A takeover of Jamshedpur FC would therefore offer Churchill a direct route back to India’s top division.

What will happen to Jamshedpur FC players?

The proposed transaction includes the contracts of 12 Jamshedpur FC players and two coaches.

Churchill Brothers have informed the AIFF that they are acquiring Jamshedpur’s sporting licence, with the existing footballing operation expected to move across as part of the deal.

The transfer is expected to be completed within 15 days of the August 14 agreement, although AIFF clearance and other formalities remain outstanding.

That means the immediate future of Jamshedpur’s ISL place depends on the federation approving the ownership and licence transfer.

Tata Steel’s decision to exit the ISL came after the company announced that it would cease Jamshedpur FC’s first-team operations and instead concentrate on its grassroots and youth programmes.

If the federation clears the transfer, Churchill Brothers would take over Jamshedpur FC’s ISL sporting licence and inherit the associated player and coaching contracts, potentially securing a return to India’s top division without having to earn promotion through the I-League system.

For Jamshedpur, meanwhile, the deal offers continuity for the club’s first-team operation despite Tata Steel’s decision to walk away.
