Kane Becomes England’s All-Time World Cup Top Scorer As England Beat Panama 2-0

Harry Kane moved clear as England’s leading World Cup scorer and guided England to a 2-0 win over Panama, a result that confirmed first place in Group L. Jude Bellingham added a goal and an assist as England, already through to the last 32, secured a tie against one of the best third-placed teams.

The victory also ended Panama’s hopes, with Panama leaving the 2026 World Cup without scoring. Kane’s decisive header was England’s second goal after Bellingham’s close-range finish, while Jordan Pickford and England’s defence again kept a clean sheet despite several scares from long-range efforts.

Kane started the match level with Gary Lineker on 10 World Cup goals and needed one strike to set a new national record. The England captain did not manage a shot before half-time, for the first time in seven World Cup appearances, having last gone without an attempt against Iran in 2022.

After the interval, Kane finally tested Orlando Mosquera with a driven effort before making history. Bellingham lifted a precise cross into the area and Kane rose highest, powering a header into the net for his 11th World Cup goal. Kane has now scored four times against Panama at finals tournaments, more than any England player versus a single opponent.

Bellingham again had major influence for England. The Real Madrid midfielder, aged 22 years and 363 days, became the youngest England player on record, since 1966, to both score and assist in a World Cup match. Bellingham has now scored in two of the last three games for England, matching the total from the previous 18 caps.

The breakthrough came on 62 minutes after England raised the tempo. Bukayo Saka’s corner from the left reached Bellingham near the six-yard box, and Bellingham stretched ahead of a defender to divert the ball into the near-bottom corner. That goal opened up a match that had been tight and tense for long spells.

Earlier, Panama had almost seized an instant lead when Tomas Rodriguez struck from range after just 10 seconds, but the shot went straight at Pickford. England replied quickly, with Marcus Rashford forcing Mosquera into a save from a low curling attempt, while Saka and Bellingham spurned half-chances as Panama’s defence stayed compact.

Jose Luis Rodriguez then troubled Thomas Tuchel’s side on 26 minutes, driving past makeshift right-back Jarell Quansah and drilling a low effort towards the bottom-left corner, which Pickford pushed away. Rashford headed over a clear opportunity and whipped a free-kick narrowly past the right post on the stroke of half-time as frustration grew.

The second half stayed open. Rodriguez curled another shot just over for Panama, while Noni Madueke saw an effort blocked by Mosquera for England. Panama thought a late consolation had arrived in the 91st minute when Jose Fajardo converted Eric Davies’ superb cross into the top-right corner, but Fajardo had moved too early and the offside flag denied Panama a first 2026 World Cup goal.

England’s stronger second-half display, reflected by 17 shots and higher expected goals, highlighted better control after the break, though Panama continued to commit players forward. The result left England advancing from Group L as group winners with momentum growing, while Panama exited the World Cup without a goal despite periods of confident attacking play.
