KL Rahul Unsold at ₹2 Lakh Base Price? The Real Reason Behind the Maharaja Trophy Snub

KL Rahul going unsold at a base price of just ₹2 lakh in the Maharaja Trophy KSCA T20 auction raised plenty of eyebrows on Friday.

After all, the India wicketkeeper-batter was one of the most sought-after players in the IPL auction, where Delhi Capitals secured his services for ₹14 crore. However, Rahul’s failure to attract a single bid in Karnataka’s premier T20 competition had little to do with his cricketing value.

Why Did KL Rahul Go Unsold?

The primary reason was Rahul’s uncertain availability for the tournament.

During the auction, franchises reportedly sought clarification on whether the India star would be available for the 2026 Maharaja Trophy season, which begins on June 20.

The auctioneer informed teams that Rahul was currently unavailable for the tournament. That update effectively ended any bidding interest, with franchises unwilling to spend a significant portion of their purse on a player who may not feature.

India Commitments Set To Keep Rahul Busy

Rahul is expected to be part of India’s ODI setup during the Afghanistan series.

Coincidentally, June 20 – the opening day of the Maharaja Trophy – is also when India are scheduled to play the third ODI against Afghanistan.

With national duty taking priority, Rahul’s participation in the state league appears unlikely.

The 34-year-old is also expected to remain in India’s plans for the white-ball tour of England, with the ODI series beginning on July 14.

Could Rahul Still Have Played?

Interestingly, the Maharaja Trophy concludes on July 12, just two days before India’s first ODI in England.

That theoretically leaves a window for Rahul to feature in the latter stages of the tournament. However, there has been no indication that he plans to join midway through the competition.

As a result, franchises chose not to take the risk.

Other India Stars Also Affected

Rahul wasn’t the only player whose valuation was impacted by international commitments.

Several India stars attracted lower bids than expected because of potential availability concerns.

Meanwhile, experienced Karnataka campaigners dominated the auction:

• Karun Nair was bought by Mangaluru Dragons for ₹18 lakh
• Manish Pandey joined Gulbarga Mystics for ₹12.75 lakh

India players Devdutt Padikkal and Prasidh Krishna were also sold for comparatively modest amounts, with franchises factoring in their likely national team commitments.

KL Rahul’s 2026 Form

Despite going unsold in the Maharaja Trophy auction, Rahul remains one of India’s most important white-ball batters.

The Delhi Capitals star enjoyed another productive IPL campaign and continues to feature prominently in India’s ODI plans heading into the 2027 World Cup cycle.

His absence from the auction bidding was therefore not a reflection of form or demand, but simply a consequence of franchises being unsure whether he would be available to take the field.
