Li Shifeng Plays Down Expectations Surrounding China’s Strong Contingent at World Championships

The BWF World Championships 2026 is just around the corner, with New Delhi set to welcome the world’s best badminton players. As always, China arrives as one of the tournament’s strongest contingents, carrying significant medal expectations across all five disciplines. In mixed doubles, Feng Yanzhe and Huang Dongping will be among the Chinese pairs aiming for glory, while in men’s singles, Shi Yuqi will open his campaign against home favourite Ayush Shetty.

Another major contender for the men’s singles crown is Li Shifeng. Speaking to myKhel on the sidelines of the BWF World Championships 2026, Li Shifeng dismissed the weight of such a large contingent and said,

“So, certainly there are many good players from China, who are large in number rather than those from other countries. But there is no pressure because of that. Because it is about learning from each other, which helps and benefits each other.”

A Turbulent 2025-26 Career For Li Shifeng

Li Shifeng’s 2025-2026 career has been marked by a mix of major victories, team success, inconsistent form, and injury setbacks. He won three significant individual titles: the 2025 Malaysia Masters, the 2025 Hong Kong Open, and the 2026 Malaysia Masters, successfully defending his Malaysian title. His Hong Kong Open triumph was particularly impressive, as he defeated Lakshya Sen in straight games.

Li also played an important role in China’s team success. He contributed to China’s victory at the 2025 Sudirman Cup and helped the country win the 2026 Thomas Cup, strengthening his reputation as a dependable player in major team competitions.

However, his career during this period was far from consistent. In 2025, he suffered unexpected early defeats, including a loss to Leong Jun Hao at the India Open and a first-round exit at the World Championships against Japan’s Yushi Tanaka. His season took another difficult turn at the 2025 World Tour Finals, where a serious right ankle injury against Chou Tien-chen kept him out for around three months.

After returning in 2026, Li struggled to regain his best form. He lost early at the German Open and later suffered opening-round defeats at the Japan Open and China Open. Overall, his period has showcased both his championship potential and the challenges of maintaining consistency after injury.
