Marco Silva Emerges As Ideal Benfica Coach Successor, Says Rui Costa

Benfica president Rui Costa has accepted Jose Mourinho’s exit to Real Madrid but backed Marco Silva as the right replacement, stressing the club’s ambition for trophies remains unchanged. Costa admitted a desire to keep Mourinho at Estadio da Luz, yet believes Silva’s profile and recent work fit Benfica’s current needs.

Mourinho agreed a three-year deal for a second spell at Real Madrid, with the Spanish club confirming the appointment on Thursday. The former Chelsea, Inter and Manchester United head coach returns after more than a decade away, stepping back into a role first held between 2010 and 2013.

During Mourinho’s first Madrid tenure, Real Madrid played 174 matches under the Portuguese coach and won 126 of them. The team drew 27 and lost 21 games in that period, claiming one LaLiga title, one Copa del Rey and one Supercopa de Espana.

Mourinho’s 72.4% win rate with Real Madrid is the best of the coach’s club career, highlighting why the LaLiga side moved again. That record comes into sharper focus after Mourinho left Benfica, where the team did not lose in the Primeira Liga but still fell short in the title race.

Mourinho guided Benfica through the 2025-26 domestic league season without defeat after taking over in September. However, the Lisbon club finished third in the Primeira Liga table, behind Porto and Sporting CP, and missed out on a record-extending 39th national championship.

The Benfica president detailed how contract talks unfolded, explaining the club’s stance on long-term planning for the head coach role. Costa underlined that Benfica did not want Mourinho entering the 2026-27 campaign with only the final 12 months remaining on the existing agreement.

“We made the proposal, and at the time we wanted to do it,” Costa said.”We talked over time and Mourinho knew perfectly well he was the coach I wanted for next season. He had a contract with Benfica and we understood that, at the end of the season, we would renew that contract. We wouldn’t let him start his last year being one year away from the end of his contract. Jose’s choice was different. Real Madrid appeared in the middle, and he took another option.”

Attention at Benfica has already turned towards Silva, who was appointed earlier this week as Mourinho’s successor. The Portuguese coach ended a five-year period with Fulham at the close of the 2025-26 season and returns to Portuguese club football with a different tactical and managerial background.

Under Silva, Fulham first won the Championship in 2021-22, then secured mid-table consistency in the Premier League across four straight campaigns. The London side posted finishes of 10th, 13th, 11th and 11th, recording a club-best 54 Premier League points in the 2024-25 season.

Silva’s record at Fulham also stands out in historical terms for the club. The coach owns a 38.2% Premier League win rate there, the highest for any Fulham manager in the competition. Silva has 58 league wins and 152 matches managed, level with Chris Coleman for most appearances.

Asked what Silva is expected to deliver in Lisbon, Costa spoke about titles and ambition while pointing to the coach’s years in England. The Benfica president emphasised the club’s scale and the pressures that naturally come with a project of that size.

“I expect what everyone expects when you sign for a club of this size, that he can bring the titles we aspire to. He is the ideal coach at the moment for Benfica, his experience in England gives us hope. I am very satisfied with the choice and with an ambitious coach who we hope will bring us what we want.”

Costa’s comments show respect for Mourinho’s impact and Real Madrid’s pull, yet also underline confidence in Silva’s arrival. Benfica move from an unbeaten domestic campaign without silverware into a new phase, guided by a coach whose recent record at Fulham suggests stability and competitive performance at top level.
