Stephen Fleming’s departure has officially ended one of the most successful partnerships in IPL history, but attention has already shifted to who could take charge of Chennai Super Kings next.
While former Delhi Capitals coach Hemang Badani has emerged as the reported frontrunner, two of Indian cricket’s biggest names, MS Dhoni and Rahul Dravid, have also featured prominently in discussions over the vacancy.

Could MS Dhoni become CSK’s head coach?
MS Dhoni’s name has inevitably entered the conversation given his unparalleled connection with the franchise.
The legendary captain led CSK to five IPL titles and worked alongside Fleming for nearly two decades, helping build the franchise’s culture and identity. His tactical acumen has long been regarded as one of the finest in world cricket, with several former players crediting him for making key on-field decisions even during Fleming’s tenure.
A transition into coaching would offer continuity at a time when CSK are entering a rebuilding phase.
However, there is currently no indication from the franchise that Dhoni is being considered for the role. His name has emerged largely through fan speculation rather than any credible reports linking him to the position.
Rahul Dravid’s experience makes him an intriguing option
Former India head coach Rahul Dravid has also been mentioned as a potential candidate by some reports.
Dravid boasts one of the strongest coaching resumes in world cricket, having overseen India’s Under-19 and A-team pathways before guiding the senior side to the 2024 T20 World Cup title. He has also previously coached Rajasthan Royals in the IPL.
His calm leadership style, emphasis on player development and ability to manage dressing rooms make him a profile that aligns closely with the culture Fleming established at CSK.
However, there is no report suggesting that Dravid is in talks with CSK or that he has been approached by the franchise.
Hemang Badani remains the reported frontrunner
While Dhoni and Dravid are among the high-profile names being discussed, The Times of India has reported that former India batter Hemang Badani is currently the leading contender to replace Fleming.
Badani coached Delhi Capitals last season and is understood to have impressed with his tactical approach. The report also states that CSK’s senior management is reviewing the franchise’s cricket operations ahead of IPL 2027.
No official shortlist yet
CSK have not announced a replacement for Fleming or confirmed any candidates.
For now, Dhoni remains the emotional choice among fans, Dravid represents an experienced and accomplished coaching option, while Badani appears to be the most realistic candidate based on current reports.
Until the franchise makes an official announcement, all names beyond Badani’s reported frontrunner status remain speculative.
