October 2026 Theatrical Releases: October is shaping up to be an interesting month at the box office, with a mix of big-ticket franchises, established stars and one film that could quietly emerge as the month’s surprise package. While the obvious attention will be on films like Drishyam: The Conclusion and Jailer 2, there is also a young romantic comedy that could benefit from exactly what the bigger films cannot manufacture, word of mouth.
Drishyam: The Conclusion
The Drishyam franchise has built its audience around one simple promise – an ordinary family caught in an extraordinary situation, and the lengths they will go to protect themselves. With Drishyam: The Conclusion, the stakes are naturally higher, given that this is being positioned as the concluding chapter of the Ajay Devgn-led franchise. The film comes with the advantage of an established audience and a property that has consistently generated conversation around its twists, characters and central mystery. It is easily one of October’s biggest theatrical bets.
Prem Keetanu
If there is one film in October that could sneak up on the box office, it is Prem Keetanu. Unlike the month’s bigger star-driven releases, this one isn’t arriving with the pressure of being an “event film” and that could actually work in its favour.
The Veer Pahariya and Aafiya Sayed-starrer is a college romance packed with friendship, chaos, first love and the kind of messy growing-up experiences that can connect strongly with younger audiences. More importantly, it is reportedly the Hindi adaptation of Malayalam hit Premalu, which already demonstrated how far a simple, well-mounted romantic comedy can travel when audiences take to its characters. There is freshness everywhere. Veer, who made his big-screen debut with the very different world of Sky Force, moves into the far more playful space of a college student. Aafiya Sayed makes her Hindi film debut, giving the film a completely new romantic pairing rather than one audiences have already seen together. Their chemistry, the film’s youthful music and its irreverent college setting give Prem Keetanu the ingredients of an easy crowd-pleaser. And that is why it could be an interesting October sleeper. Films like this don’t necessarily need a massive opening to work. If the humour lands, the romance connects and the music catches on, Prem Keetanu could become the film audiences discover through friends, reels and repeat conversations eventually turning into a genuine surprise hit.
Jailer 2
Then there is Rajinikanth returning to one of his most celebrated recent characters with Jailer 2. The first film became a major pan-India success, powered by Rajinikanth’s screen presence, Nelson’s distinctive treatment and a supporting cast that became part of the film’s pop-culture conversation. The sequel arrives with enormous expectations and the advantage of an already established world. For the Hindi market as well, the question will be whether the sequel can recreate the larger-than-life theatrical experience that made the first Jailer such a phenomenon.
Prahaar
Another film to watch out for in October is Prahaar – starring Rajkumar Rao and Wamiqa Gabbi and directed by Avinash Arun, which brings a very different flavour to the month’s theatrical line-up. If Drishyam: The Conclusion and Jailer 2 are October’s obvious theatrical heavyweights, Prem Keetanu could be the wild card. Sometimes the biggest surprise at the box office is not the film everyone is waiting for, it is the one audiences weren’t expecting to love.
