PCB Overhauled Central Contracts Explained: Pakistan Players Must Meet Match Thresholds to Qualify

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has introduced a sweeping overhaul of its central contract structure, linking eligibility directly to international appearances and format specialisation in a bid to create greater transparency and accountability within the national setup.

Under the new system, only male cricketers who have played at least four Tests, six ODIs, or six T20Is in the preceding 12 months will be eligible for central contracts from July 1, 2026, to June 30, 2027. The move is designed to ensure that contracts are awarded to players actively contributing at the international level.

However, the eligibility benchmark will apply only to the senior categories, while emerging players will continue to be accommodated through a separate pathway.

PCB Introduces Format-Based Contract Structure

As per an ESPNCricinfo report, the PCB has moved away from its traditional category-based model and introduced a five-track structure that reflects the modern realities of international cricket.

The new categories are:

1. Track AB – Multi-format players featuring in Tests and ODIs
2. Track A – Test specialists
3. Track BC – White-ball specialists (ODIs and T20Is)
4. Track C – T20 specialists
5. Track D – Emerging and pathway cricketers

Each of the four senior tracks will contain two tiers, with salaries determined by tier placement. While remuneration differs between tiers, eligibility requirements, domestic cricket obligations, and No Objection Certificate (NOC) regulations remain identical within each track.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, white-ball head coach Mike Hesson and director academies Aaqib Javed formally unveiled the new structure earlier this week and later conducted a workshop with players to explain the changes.

Higher Rewards for Red-Ball Specialists

One of the most notable aspects of the revamped structure is the PCB’s effort to financially protect players who dedicate themselves to Test cricket.

According to details of the new framework:

The PCB said the structure recognises the unique demands of Test cricket while allowing white-ball specialists greater flexibility to participate in global franchise leagues.

Match Fees Differ Based on Contract Track

Unlike the previous system where match fees were uniform across categories, the new model rewards players according to their designated track.

A Test specialist in Track A will receive:

• PKR 1.5 million per Test
• PKR 650,000 per ODI
• PKR 450,000 per T20I

Meanwhile, multi-format players in Track AB will earn:

• PKR 1.5 million per Test
• PKR 750,000 per ODI
• PKR 500,000 per T20I

White-ball specialists in Track BC will also receive PKR 750,000 for ODIs and PKR 500,000 for T20Is, while T20 specialists in Track C will earn PKR 500,000 for both white-ball formats.

Importantly, selectors will retain the flexibility to pick players in formats outside their designated track whenever required.

Massive ICC Trophy Bonus Introduced

The PCB has also introduced a performance-based incentive system aimed at rewarding success against stronger opposition and in major tournaments.

The standout feature is a lucrative ICC event bonus. Any player involved in a successful ICC tournament campaign will receive a bonus worth 500 percent of their match fee, creating a substantial financial incentive for international success.

Pakistan’s last ICC title came in the 2017 Champions Trophy, making the provision particularly significant as the team looks to return to the top of world cricket.

T20 Specialists Get Greater Freedom

The new contract model significantly relaxes restrictions on players contracted as T20 specialists.

Players in Track C will no longer face limits on the number of overseas franchise leagues they can participate in. The PCB believes the lower retainer in this category can be offset through earnings from global T20 competitions.

Under the revised NOC policy:

1. Track AB players can participate in one overseas T20 league per contract cycle.
2. Track BC players can participate in two overseas leagues.
3. Track C players have no cap on overseas T20 leagues.
4. Track A players cannot participate in white-ball franchise leagues outside the PSL.

All centrally contracted players will still be required to remain available for the Pakistan Super League.

Three-Step Evaluation Process

Merely meeting the international appearance threshold will not guarantee a contract.

Players must also satisfy a three-stage evaluation process:

1. Medical and fitness assessment
2. Domestic cricket participation requirements
3. Minimum performance score benchmarks

Fitness screenings will take place every four months.

For example, Track AB players must participate in at least four first-class and four List A matches annually, while Track A cricketers must feature in a minimum of six first-class games.

The PCB has also reduced the influence of selectors in contract reviews. Selection committee assessments will account for only 15 percent of a player’s annual evaluation, with the remaining 85 percent based on performances in international and domestic cricket as well as fitness standards.

A Shift Towards Accountability

The new contract structure marks one of the most significant reforms in Pakistan cricket’s professional era. By aligning remuneration with format specialisation, introducing clear eligibility criteria and placing greater emphasis on performance metrics, the PCB hopes to create a system that is both transparent and sustainable.

Whether it succeeds in improving consistency and player development will become clearer over the coming seasons, but the message from the PCB is unmistakable: central contracts must now be earned through performance, fitness and availability rather than reputation alone.
