Portugal World Cup Focus: Martinez Downplays Future Speculation

Roberto Martinez insists attention stays on Portugal’s World Cup campaign, not on questions over the head coach’s future, ahead of the Group K opener against DR Congo in Houston, stressing clearly: “The World Cup is all that matters.”

Reports on 16 June suggested Martinez could leave the role once the tournament ends in North America, after a spell that started in 2023 and already includes the Nations League title in 2025 and a Euro 2024 quarter-final appearance with Portugal.

Martinez downplayed the latest talk around his position, pointing out that the matter has long been discussed internally in Portugal and that the squad’s mindset has not shifted, despite outside attention returning to the subject in the build-up to the DR Congo match.

Opta’s supercomputer calculates Portugal’s chance of lifting the trophy at 7.8 per cent, ranking the team fifth among contenders, yet Martinez emphasises that calculations and predictions mean little if the Selecao do not perform from the first whistle in Group K.

Martinez arrives at this World Cup with an impressive record in the competition, winning 70 per cent of matches so far, with seven victories from 10 games; among coaches with at least 10 World Cup fixtures, only Tele Santana, Didier Deschamps and Joachim Low have higher win percentages.

Addressing renewed speculation, Martinez said: “It’s not news. We’ve talked about this many times in Portugal,” and then underlined that “maybe it’s new elsewhere, but in Portugal we’ve discussed it a lot already. The focus remains continuing the work we’ve done over the last three and a half years.”

The Portugal coach added: “What I can point to is a very consistent campaign. We won the Nations League the most demanding edition yet. We played 10 matches, advanced through the knockout rounds, defeated Germany in Germany, and then won the final against Spain. Those are significant achievements. The team is in excellent condition. The players have confidence, but they also understand that the World Cup is completely different from any other competition. We must prove ourselves all over again. When I arrived in Portugal, the objective was to try to win everything possible every day, but above all to prepare for the World Cup. Now we are here, 40 matches later, after winning the Nations League, and the focus remains exactly the same: The World Cup is what matters. Naturally, people may see it as news, but for me, it isn’t really news. It’s simply a fact, not a news story.”

DR Congo reach this World Cup after progressing through the inter-confederation play-offs, where DR Congo defeated Jamaica 1-0 after extra time in Mexico, and overall, including those play-offs, 10 of DR Congo’s 13 qualifying fixtures ended either level, with two draws, or with a one-goal margin, split across six wins and two defeats.

Martinez praised the upcoming opponents, stating: “We all have enormous respect for what Congo and their coach have accomplished, we’re talking about a team that finished ahead of Cameroon and Nigeria. Then they performed very well at the continental level. I would describe them as a very flexible team. They are not simply a team that sits deep and defends. They defend space extremely well and have many players competing in major European leagues.”
