Rohit Sharma Retirement Rumours Are False: BCCI Secy gives Strong Assurance amid Retirement Rumours

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has shrugged off the rumours of Rohit Sharma’s retirement after the Lord’s ODI against England.

The Indian star is reportedly set to be ripped from the ODI plans, and the final ODI against England was supposed to be his final one, as selectors told him he was not in their plans for 2027 ODI World Cup.

But on Friday (July 17), BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia refuted the rumours of his retirement, claiming the speculations were all baseless.

“There are a lot of speculations going on in media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday. Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told the media.

There have been questions regarding Rohit Sharma’s future as an international cricketer. Reports have claimed that the head coach and chief selector explained Rohit’s current status, a discussion which took place a week before the ODI series.

Although the BCCI statement has added a new chapter in this saga, Rohit’s place in the Indian ODI team remains in doubt. The 39-year-old has failed to replicate his old form and has been dismissed cheaply in the England series. He scored 11 and 26 runs respectively, with a combined strike rate of less than 54. The trademark aggression in his batting was missing in the last two matches, and with the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal waiting in the wings, Rohit’s place has become further uncertain.

Amid this, India will play England at Lord’s on Sunday, which will be a series decider as well. The Indian team, led by Shubman Gill, won the first match by 6 wickets but England roared back in Cardiff with a 4-wicket victory to level the series.
