Cortisone injections to manage the pain backfired catastrophically, leading to an infection that ravaged his Achilles tendon. By the time he reached specialist care in Spain, gangrene had consumed an 11cm section of the tendon, leaving the bone exposed and “squishy.”

‘You’ll be Lucky to Walk Again’

Doctors feared he might lose his leg entirely or never walk properly again. But he defied the odds and came back to the pinnacle of life. But the battle wasn’t easy. Cazorla used to celebrate by kissing his right forearm every time he scored. The reason? It had the tattoo of India, the name of his daughter.

Over the next two years, Cazorla endured a gruelling ordeal of up to 11 surgeries, including skin grafts taken from his forearm, where a tattoo of his daughter’s name, India, once sat.
