Shah Rukh Khan Birthday Exclusive! Why Is SRK ‘The Last Of The Stars’? Om Shanti Om AD On What Makes SRK Unmatched
Ask anyone who has met Shah Rukh Khan or worked closely with him, and chances are they have a memorable King Khan story to share. In an exclusive conversation with Filmibeat Sub Editor Mimtaz, Om Shanti Om assistant director Jaimin Bal took a trip down memory lane, recalling his experience of working with the superstar on Farah Khan’s directorial.
But that’s not all! Jaimin also opened up about what makes Shah Rukh Khan so special and why he believes the superstar is truly ‘The Last Of The Stars’. Remember when SRK famously described himself using this iconic line on Anupam Kher’s talk show Kucch Bhi Ho Sakta Hai? Years later, the statement still makes us wonder… What really makes King Khan’s stardom so difficult to replicate? Jaimin shares his perspective!

Explaining the same, Jaimin said, “I think what makes Shah Rukh Khan special is the combination of enormous stardom and an unmistakable appetite for the work. At sixteen, working on Om Shanti Om as a junior assistant director, I was struck by the energy he brought to a set. At that stage of his career, he had nothing left to prove about being a star, yet he approached the work with astonishing vitality. For audiences, I think that matters. His screen presence has evolved across genres and generations, but the sense that he gives himself completely to a performance remains.”
He continued, “I would hesitate to compare him dismissively with younger actors, because every generation builds its own relationship with cinema. What is difficult to replicate is a bond with an audience built over decades, through many different versions of yourself, while retaining that hunger to keep creating. Farah Khan’s extraordinary efficiency and the way she managed the unit also made an impression on me. Being on that set taught me that lasting excellence is not only charisma in front of a camera. It is also commitment, discipline and respect for the collective work behind it.”
Exclusive! Jaimin Bal On What Makes SRK An Icon Across Generations
When asked what has allowed Shah Rukh Khan to remain relevant across generations despite constantly reinventing himself, Jaimin Bal pointed to one quality – his “hunger” for the work. Recalling his experience of working on Om Shanti Om at just 16 as a junior AD, Jaimin revealed that his responsibilities included bringing artists onto the set, delivering scripts and assisting with the day’s work.
However, what left a lasting impression on him was the extraordinary energy SRK brought to the sets despite already being an established superstar. “The quality I would point to is his hunger for the work. I was sixteen when I worked as a junior assistant director on Om Shanti Om. My responsibilities were the everyday duties of a junior member of the unit: bringing artists onto the set, delivering scripts and helping with the day’s work. What has stayed with me is the extraordinary energy Shah Rukh brought to his work, even though he was already such a huge star. When I look at his ability to reinvent himself, I connect it with that appetite. My impression was of someone whose success had not diminished his involvement in the work. For me, that is a very important quality in an artist. You have to keep finding a reason to give yourself fully to what you are doing. Nearly two decades later, that energy is still my clearest memory of him. I think the willingness to keep working with that hunger helps an actor remain compelling as audiences and cinema change,” Jaimin concluded.
