Shreyas Iyer’s debut as T20I captain was meant to mark the beginning of a fresh, dominant era, but it quickly turned into a nightmare against a spirited Irish side.

Opting to bowl first, Iyer watched as Ireland posted a formidable 182/9, driven by captain Lorcan Tucker’s brilliant half-century and Gareth Delany’s crucial 49.

In response, India’s batting lineup crumbled under pressure. Despite a blistering 19-ball 50 from opener Abhishek Sharma, the rest of the batting order failed to fire. Iyer himself managed only 3 runs off 7 balls, and India was ultimately bowled out for 148 in 18.5 overs, handing Ireland their first-ever victory over India across all formats.

Interestingly, despite the horrible showing from the team, Iyer refused to make excuses but drew attention with his post-match comments. Acknowledging that the team lost execution in the middle overs, he surprisingly summarized the historic upset by stating it was a “great start as a captain” because the squad got to experience the testing conditions and learn from the challenging wicket.

The trend of debut captaincy defeats in T20Is spans nearly a decade and features some of the most prominent names in modern Indian cricket.

Virat Kohli (January 26, 2017): The modern-day legend took over the T20I reins full-time in 2017. However, his debut as the official T20I skipper ended in disappointment when India lost to England in Kanpur. Despite the initial hiccup, Kohli went on to have a highly successful, historic tenure as captain.

Rishabh Pant (June 9, 2022): Stepping up to lead the side against South Africa in Delhi, the dynamic wicketkeeper-batter saw his team falter. The Proteas managed to outplay the Men in Blue, adding Pant’s name to the list of debut defeats.

Shubman Gill (July 6, 2024): Leading a young squad on a tour of Zimbabwe, Gill faced a stunning upset in Harare. The relatively inexperienced Indian side was caught off guard by the motivated hosts, marking a rocky start to Gill’s leadership journey.

Shreyas Iyer (June 26, 2026): The most recent addition to the list occurred in Belfast, where the reigning T20 World Cup champions suffered a historic 34-run defeat at the hands of Ireland.
