Shubman Gill Injury Update: India Captain Misses Sri Lanka Warm-Up

The 26-year-old suffered an impact injury to his right ring finger during Thursday’s practice session in Colombo and will remain under the observation of the BCCI medical team. In his absence, KL Rahul captained India on the opening day of the warm-up fixture at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground.

BCCI opts against taking risks before Sri Lanka Tests

The injury comes just over a week before India begin their two-Test series against Sri Lanka, with the opening match scheduled for August 15 in Galle.

In a statement, the BCCI confirmed Gill had been rested as a precaution rather than ruled out of the series.

“Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during practice on Thursday and will sit out of the opening day as a precautionary measure. He will be under the observation of the BCCI medical team.”

The decision suggests India are unwilling to take any unnecessary risks with their captain before the start of an important World Test Championship assignment.

Shubman Gill was struck twice during training

Reports on Thursday had already indicated Gill endured a difficult training session after being hit more than once.

According to Times Now, Gill was first struck on his right hand while batting against seamer Gurnoor Brar before receiving treatment and continuing his net session. He was later hit again while fielding at first slip but was reportedly able to complete training without significant discomfort.

While those incidents initially appeared minor, the BCCI’s decision to rest him for the opening day of the warm-up match indicates the medical staff have opted for a cautious approach.

Focus remains on first Test in Galle

The three-day practice fixture represents India’s only red-ball preparation before the Sri Lanka series, which also marks the team’s first overseas Test assignment of the new World Test Championship cycle.

Gill’s availability for the remainder of the warm-up match remains uncertain, but there has been no indication from the BCCI that his participation in the first Test is under threat.

For now, India’s priority will be ensuring their captain recovers fully before attention shifts to Galle, where the two-match series begins on August 15.
