India vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is expected to captain the side in the second ODI against England if Shubman Gill is ruled out through injury.

Gill retired hurt during India’s six-wicket win in the series opener after suffering cramps in his right leg, raising concerns over his availability for the Cardiff ODI.

Why is Shubman Gill a doubt?

Gill walked off unbeaten on 80 during India’s chase at Edgbaston after experiencing discomfort in his right leg.

The India skipper appeared to clutch the back of his leg before leaving the field in the 26th over, prompting an injury scare.

However, Gill later clarified that the issue was cramp rather than a serious muscle injury, with the team yet to confirm his availability for the second ODI.

Shreyas Iyer next in line to captain India

Should Gill fail to recover in time, vice-captain Shreyas Iyer is expected to take charge.

Iyer has been officially named as India’s deputy for the England ODI series, making him the natural replacement as captain if Gill is unavailable.

Who could replace Gill in the playing XI?

If Gill misses the second ODI, Ishan Kishan is the frontrunner to replace him at the top of the order alongside Rohit Sharma.

India could also reshuffle the batting order depending on team balance, but Kishan remains the most likely opening option.

Injury concerns extend beyond Shubman Gill

India are also monitoring pacer Gurnoor Brar, who experienced a calf issue during the first ODI.

If Brar is unavailable, Arshdeep Singh or uncapped fast bowler Prince Yadav are among the leading candidates to replace him in the playing XI.

The BCCI is yet to issue an official update on the fitness of either Gill or Brar ahead of the second ODI.
