Son of a Farmer and Daily Wage Labourer, Praveen Chithravel Soars to Commonwealth Triple Jump Silver

When Praveen Chithravel landed at 16.58m in the men’s triple jump final at the Commonwealth Games 2026, it wasn’t just enough to secure a silver medal, it was the culmination of a journey built on sacrifice, resilience and unwavering belief.

On Saturday at Glasgow’s Scotstoun Stadium, India’s Praveen Chithravel secured the silver medal in the men’s triple jump with an excellent display.

Jamaica’s Jordan Scott claimed gold with 16.72 metres, while India’s Selva Prabhu Thirumaran took bronze at 16.52 metres. For Chithravel, the podium was less a sudden ascent than the culmination of a carefully forged trajectory.

Born in 2001 into a modest household in rural Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu, Chithravel grew up amid the constraints familiar to many aspiring athletes from India’s agricultural hinterlands. His father worked as a daily-wage farm labourer; resources for specialised training, equipment, or travel were scarce.

He grew up in a family where every rupee mattered. His father worked first as a daily-wage agricultural labourer before taking up a job as a security guard to support the family, while his mother also contributed through agricultural work. Despite the financial hardships, his parents ensured their son’s athletic dreams never faded.

Praveen’s early progress depended heavily on the intervention of coach Indira Suresh, who identified his potential at the Centre of Excellence in Chennai, provided material support from her own means, and stood firm through a career-threatening knee injury that once risked ending his pathway altogether. Those formative years instilled a resilience that would later define his competitive temperament.

Chithravel’s subsequent record reflects both talent and application: a bronze at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games, the Indian national record of 17.37 metres, an Asian Games bronze, and consistent continental medals. Yet the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham left an indelible mark. There he finished fourth, denied a medal by the narrowest of margins.

The near-miss became a reference point rather than a setback-an unfinished chapter that Glasgow has now closed with composure. In June, Praveen also qualified for the Asian Games with a mammoth 16.92m jump. Although he didn’t leap as long as that in Glasgow, Praveen will be eagle-eyed to snatch the Gold at the upcoming Asian Games.
