Former India skipper Sourav Ganguly has come under the scanner of a police investigation after his office received threatening letters directed at him, his wife Dona Ganguly and people close to the family.
The development came to light after two such letters reached Ganguly’s office. Following the latest threats, a complaint was lodged at the Thakurpukur Police Station in south Kolkata, prompting the police to begin a detailed probe into the matter.

Ganguly, who currently serves as the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), has acknowledged the threats and said the matter has been handed over to the authorities. He also revealed that the phone number connected with the threatening communication appears to have originated in Kolkata.
While the incident has raised concerns over his security, Ganguly indicated that he already has security arrangements in place and expressed confidence that the police would deal with the situation appropriately.
Threats Reportedly Continued For Months
The investigation has also brought to light a potentially worrying pattern. According to police sources, threatening letters had allegedly been sent in Ganguly’s name on earlier occasions over the past six months. Those communications were not initially considered serious enough to trigger a major response.
The latest letters, however, reportedly contained direct threats, prompting Ganguly’s office to approach the police.
Investigators are now attempting to establish whether the recent letters and the earlier communications were sent by the same person. The police are examining the contents of the letters, courier details and a mobile number believed to be linked to the case.
Police Follow Courier and SIM Card Trail
The initial investigation has reportedly provided police with a possible lead. Officials suspect that the latest letters may have been sent through a courier service by an individual based in Belgharia in North 24 Parganas.
Authorities are seeking details from the courier company while also tracking the movement of the SIM card allegedly associated with the threatening communication. These steps are aimed at identifying the sender and understanding the reason behind the threats.
For now, police are investigating the source of the communications as well as the motive of the person responsible. They are also checking whether the multiple threatening letters received over the past several months form part of the same pattern.
Despite the incident, Ganguly has attempted to reassure those concerned about his safety, pointing to the security provided to him. The investigation remains underway as police work to establish the identity of the sender and determine the credibility and motive behind the threats.
The former India player also attended CAB’s Independence Day celebration at the Eden Gardens on Saturday on the 80th Independence Day.
