Spurs Survival In Premier League As Porro Sheds 100-kilo Weight Of Pressure

Pedro Porro compared the fear of relegation to carrying a 100-kilo burden, and explained that Spurs now feel far lighter as planning starts for the next top-flight campaign under Roberto De Zerbi.

The win over Everton proved decisive because West Ham defeated Leeds United on the same day, meaning a different result at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would have sent Spurs down. The narrow home victory therefore became the key moment in their survival, shaping the mood around the club heading into the summer.

Porro reflected on how that survival battle affected health and form while speaking at Spain’s World Cup base. “Physically and mentally, I am much better now when you take off the 100-kilo weight that was on top of us,” Porro said, describing the pressure that surrounded Tottenham’s relegation fight throughout the closing weeks.

The defender stressed that the tension grew as fixtures ran out, yet Spurs still achieved their main target. “We had a tough end to the season, but everything worked out in the end, which is the most important thing. Roberto came in and kept us in the Premier League.” That escape allows focus to move towards future progress.

Despite Tottenham’s struggles, Porro delivered standout creativity numbers among Premier League defenders in 2025-26. Porro created 53 chances, more than any other defender in the competition. Data also showed strong expected assist figures, placing Porro among the most productive players from the back in England’s top division.

Only Marcos Senesi, who has now joined Spurs, posted a higher expected assist total among defenders. Senesi finished with 4.7 xA, while Porro recorded 4.5 xA. Their combined attacking output from defence is likely to interest analysts across Europe, given both can influence matches with deliveries and forward passing from deeper positions.

Porro’s performances have drawn reports of interest from Manchester City, where Porro was under contract between 2019 and 2022 while spending each season away on loan. However, possible transfer discussions are not a priority for Porro, who is currently with Spain and preparing for a major international tournament.

Porro made it clear that club speculation can wait until after the national-team schedule ends. “About City, I have not read anything, I do not know anything, I am concentrating on the World Cup, and then we’ll see,” said the 26-year-old. For now, Porro’s attention remains split between Spain’s World Cup hopes and Tottenham’s Premier League future.
