Just 39 seconds into the second half, Ruben Vargas met Johan Manzambi’s low cross, took one touch, then drilled his finish off the base of the near post. Canada quickly faced a steeper challenge when a second goal followed 11 minutes later. Breel Embolo rolled Luc De Fougerolles and slipped a pass to Manzambi, whose strike went straight at Maxime Crepeau. The goalkeeper failed to deal with it cleanly, and the ball squirmed over the line, leaving the co-hosts trailing 2-0.

That goal was timed at one minute and ten seconds after David’s introduction, making it the second-fastest substitute goal at the tournament so far. Cornelius then twice came close to equalising, heading one chance wide and failing to connect properly with another, as Canada pressed for the point that would have kept them in Vancouver.
