Former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal has been elected as the president of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), becoming the youngest person to assume the role.
The 37-year-old will serve a four-year term after securing a landslide victory, polling 73 out of 75 votes from councillors at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

Tamim had been heading the ad-hoc committee since April, taking charge after the previous president was found guilty of corruption. His formal election marks a significant transition for Bangladesh cricket.
Tamim said: “There are a lot of things, loopholes… We have to deal with 1972 councillors. So they also have to agree. But for the betterment of Bangladesh cricket, if any constitutional changes are needed, we will definitely discuss and consider them.”
The former opener, who represented Bangladesh in 70 Tests and 243 ODIs over 15 years, said he would need time to implement structural improvements.
“It is very new for me because I still have to mix with all these people. I may not know more than half of them. I met them for the first time. So give us some time, let us discuss, and then we will find out where improvements are needed,” he added.
Tamim emphasised transparency and integrity, stating he did not want any board member actions to spark controversy. “From my side and from the whole board’s side, we will try to act with full honesty,” he said.
Will India-Bangladesh Ties Improve?
His appointment comes amid recent turbulence for the BCB, including a high-profile standoff with the BCCI earlier this year over pacer Mustafizur Rahman’s omission from the IPL despite a contract with Kolkata Knight Riders.
After the geopolitical upsurge in Bangladesh and tensions, India also cancelled their tour to the neighbouring country. Earlier this year, Bangladesh didn’t come to India for the T20 World Cup and withdrew their name from the competition, thus further straining the ties. But since the formation of new government, things have taken a positive turn and Tamim’s appointment may further accelerate the mendings. Tamim had been among those advocating a more conciliatory approach towards India.
