The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 has started with title contenders India, England and Australia all opening with wins. On JioStar’s ‘The Experts’ View’, former England Captain and ICC expert Nasser Hussain and former England cricketer Alex Hartley discussed Shafali Verma, Beth Mooney and Nat Sciver-Brunt, while also assessing Sophie Ecclestone’s role for England.
Nasser Hussain said Sophie Ecclestone has adjusted well as batters now play her with more care. He said captains, including Heather Knight and Nat Sciver-Brunt, use her when wickets are needed and often keep her overs for the end, where her control can still decide matches.

“Sophie Ecclestone is a world-class bowler. She has had to adapt because batters have changed their approach against her. When she first arrived on the scene, batters tried to dominate her. Now, she is the go-to bowler for her captain. Whether it is Heather Knight or Nat Sciver-Brunt, when a wicket is needed, Ecclestone gets the ball. Captains often hold back her overs for the death. You might think the game is slipping away, but she is being saved for the back end. Batters have tried to see her off without taking risks. So, she may not take four wickets every game. But in high-scoring matches, she will bowl four overs for 15 runs. That spell wins you the game. So, she has adapted as batters have become more defensive. Very rarely do you look at an England scorecard and see Sophie Ecclestone has gone for runs. Almost never. That is the mark of a true champion.”
ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026: Mooney & Sciver-Brunt praised
Alex Hartley said Beth Mooney is the natural choice to follow Alyssa Healy as Australia’s wicketkeeper-batter. She said Mooney’s batting, partnership play and game sense make her a key player, and that taking on the gloves should not harm her T20 batting because of her sharp awareness and calm method.
Hartley also called Nat Sciver-Brunt a complete cricketer. She said Sciver-Brunt begins by rotating strike and finding gaps before lifting the pace after about 25 or 30 balls. Hartley added that Sciver-Brunt is equally useful with the ball, taking middle-overs wickets and bowling tightly at the death.
