Tottenham Reinforce Defence With Jan Paul Van Hecke Transfer

Tottenham have completed the signing of Netherlands defender Jan Paul van Hecke from Brighton for a reported 52m fee on a long-term deal, as the club continue rebuilding after back-to-back 17th-place Premier League finishes and a final-day escape against Everton in a 1-0 victory last season.

The move brings Van Hecke back under the management of Roberto De Zerbi, who is now Spurs head coach, after the pair previously worked together at Brighton between 2023 and 2024, when Van Hecke made 50 appearances in all competitions for the Italian.

Van Hecke becomes Tottenham’s third defensive recruit of the current transfer window, following Andy Robertson and Marco Senesi to north London, as the club seek stronger protection at the back after two campaigns spent battling relegation and surviving only on the final matchday in each season.

Brighton relied heavily on Van Hecke’s defensive work in 2025-26, when no teammate recorded more interceptions, with 48, or more blocks, with 31, in all competitions, while Van Hecke also won a team-high 223 duels and contested 361, a figure exceeded only by Diego Gomez with 374.

Across Van Hecke’s entire Brighton spell, the defender played 131 games in all competitions and scored four goals, three of those arriving during the 2025-26 season, and Van Hecke now joins Tottenham while representing the Netherlands at the World Cup, adding tournament experience to the squad at a key moment.

Micky [van de Ven] has also told me some great things about the club, so I can’t wait to get started. Tottenham highlighted the agreement with an announcement on social media, sharing confirmation of the transfer and an image of Van Hecke, as the club’s official channels underlined the defender’s arrival as part of a wider effort to strengthen key positions ahead of next season in the Premier League.

With a substantial transfer outlay, proven defensive numbers at Brighton, a previous working relationship with Roberto De Zerbi and strong personal motivation expressed in Van Hecke’s comments, Tottenham are setting clear expectations that the Netherlands international will play a central role in efforts to improve league form next season.
