Glasgow, Scotland, July 27: India climbed to eighth place in the Commonwealth Games 2026 medal standings after weightlifter Muthupandi Raja clinched a silver medal in the men’s 65kg event on Sunday (July 26), taking the country’s tally to four medals after two days of competition.

Muthupandi’s silver capped a memorable day for India’s weightlifting contingent, which accounted for all three medals won on Sunday. Earlier, Rishikanta Singh Chanambam opened India’s account for the day with a silver medal in the men’s 60kg category before Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu produced another dominant performance to win her third successive Commonwealth Games gold in the women’s 48kg division.

India had opened its medal tally on Day 1 through para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar, who secured a bronze medal. With one gold, two silver and one bronze, India now has four medals and occupies eighth position in the overall standings.

Australia continue to dominate the medal table with an impressive haul of 36 medals, including 15 gold medals. England are second with 18 medals, while hosts Scotland occupy third place. Malaysia, thanks to its weightlifting success, sits just above India in seventh with two gold medals despite having the same total number of medals.

India will now look to add to its tally as boxing, badminton, wrestling, shooting and athletics events gather pace over the coming days in Glasgow.

Mirabai Chanu Stole the Show on Day 2

India’s biggest moment of the day came through Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu, who once again underlined her dominance in Commonwealth weightlifting by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 48kg category.

Competing in her fourth Commonwealth Games, Mirabai overcame failed opening attempts in both the snatch and clean & jerk before producing lifts of 85kg in snatch and 105kg in clean & jerk for a winning total of 190kg. The victory made her India’s first gold medallist of the Glasgow Games and added another chapter to her remarkable Commonwealth legacy after gold medals in Gold Coast (2018) and Birmingham (2022), following a silver in Glasgow in 2014.

With all three medals on Sunday coming from weightlifting, the discipline has once again emerged as India’s strongest contributor at the Commonwealth Games. After two days of competition, India’s medal tally stands at one gold, two silver and one bronze, placing the country eighth in the overall standings.

Australia continued to dominate the medal table with 39 medals (17 gold, 9 silver and 13 bronze), while England occupied second place with 19 medals, followed by hosts Scotland in third.

India’s boxing campaign gathered momentum as Jadumani Singh and Asian Games bronze medallist Preeti Pawar advanced to the quarterfinals with dominant victories, moving within one win of securing medals. Jadumani outclassed Pakistan’s Sumama Rehman with a unanimous 5-0 decision in the men’s event, while Preeti forced a Referee Stops Contest (RSC) victory over Malawi’s Deborah Mtenje in the second round of her women’s 54kg pre-quarterfinal. However, Aditya Pratap bowed out after suffering a narrow 2-3 defeat to Uganda’s Nuhu Batte in the men’s 65kg category.

Heartbreak for India in Lawn Bowls

It was a disappointing outing for India at the Lawn Bowls Arena as the women’s pairs team of Pinki Singh and Rupa Rani Tirkey crashed out following a dramatic tie-break defeat to England in their final Group B match. After splitting the opening two sets, the Indian duo lost the decisive tie-break to miss out on a place in the semifinals. Meanwhile, Putul Sonowal’s hopes of reaching the men’s singles last four also suffered a major setback after a 0.5-1.5 loss to Malta’s Shaun James Parnis, leaving him with one final group match remaining.
