Glasgow, Scotland, July 27: India remained in eighth place in the Commonwealth Games 2026 medal standings after weightlifter Gyaneshwari Yadav clinched a silver medal in the women’s 53 kg event on Monday (July 27), taking the country’s tally to five medals after three days of competition.
Yadav’s silver continued the dream run for India’s weightlifting contingent. Earlier, Mirabai Chanu opened India’s medal account with a gold medal in the 48 kg weight category. India had opened its medal tally on Day 1 through para powerlifter Jhandu Kumar, who secured a bronze medal. With one gold, two silver and one bronze, India now has four medals and occupies eighth position in the overall standings.
Australia continues to dominate the medal table with an impressive haul of 40 medals, including 17 gold medals. England is second with 21 medals, while Nigeria occupies third place with 9 medals. Malaysia, thanks to its weightlifting success, sits just above India in seventh with two gold medals despite having lesser number of medals.
India will now look to add to its tally as boxing, wrestling, shooting and athletics events gather pace over the coming days in Glasgow.

Mirabai Chanu Stole the Show on Day 3
India’s biggest moment of the day came through Olympic silver medallist Mirabai Chanu, who once again underlined her dominance in Commonwealth weightlifting by winning her third consecutive Commonwealth Games gold medal in the women’s 48kg category.
Competing in her fourth Commonwealth Games, Mirabai overcame failed opening attempts in both the snatch and clean & jerk before producing lifts of 85kg in snatch and 105kg in clean & jerk for a winning total of 190kg.
The victory made her India’s first gold medallist of the Glasgow Games and added another chapter to her remarkable Commonwealth legacy after gold medals in Gold Coast (2018) and Birmingham (2022), following a silver in Glasgow in 2014.
Heartbreak For Gurindervir Singh
India’s fastest man, Gurindervir Singh, suffered a disappointing exit from the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after failing to qualify for the men’s 100m semifinals. Competing in Heat 4 of the opening round, Gurindervir finished second with a timing of 10.39 seconds, trailing Jamaica’s Rohan Watson, who won the heat in 10.13 seconds.
Despite the strong effort, Gurindervir’s time ranked 28th overall across the 11 heats. With only the 17 fastest athletes progressing to the semifinals, the Indian national record holder bowed out earlier than expected, ending his Commonwealth Games campaign in the first round.
