Why BCCI Shifted Duleep Trophy Final From Bengaluru To Chennai

Bengaluru, Aug 19: The BCCI has shifted the Duleep Trophy 2026-27 final from the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru to the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, with spectator access emerging as the key reason behind the change.

The summit clash will be played from September 6 to 10, while the preliminary matches will continue at the Centre of Excellence from August 23 as originally scheduled.

Why BCCI Shifted Duleep Trophy Final From Bengaluru To Chennai

The decision does not stem from any concern over the quality of the Bengaluru facility or the playing conditions. Instead, the BCCI wants the tournament’s biggest match to be played at a venue where a larger number of fans can watch the action from the stands.

Crowd restrictions at CoE prompt change

BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia explained that there are restrictions on the number of spectators who can attend matches at the Centre of Excellence.

“The Duleep Trophy is an important first-class tournament in our calendar and carries a rich legacy. The quality of cricket is always high, and we want fans to have the opportunity to watch the final live at the stadium,” Saikia said.

He added that moving the final to a venue where fans can attend was considered the appropriate decision.

The MA Chidambaram Stadium, one of India’s traditional cricket venues, provides the BCCI with the opportunity to stage the five-day final in front of a larger crowd and give the domestic tournament a more prominent match-day setting.

Why only the final has been moved

The BCCI has retained the Centre of Excellence as the venue for the earlier stages. The first matches will begin on August 23, with East Zone taking on North East Zone and North Zone facing West Zone.

That indicates the change is specifically about the requirements of the final rather than a broader decision to move the tournament out of Bengaluru.

The Duleep Trophy has also returned to its traditional zonal format this season, with Central Zone, South Zone, East Zone, West Zone, North Zone and North East Zone competing for the title.

More broadcast coverage for Duleep Trophy

The venue change is also accompanied by an effort to improve the tournament’s visibility. Saikia confirmed that all Duleep Trophy matches will be streamed live, while television coverage will be provided for one quarter-final, one semi-final and the final.

The combination of increased broadcast coverage and a larger stadium for the final reflects the BCCI’s attempt to give domestic cricket greater visibility.

For the players, the move means the tournament’s biggest fixture will now take place at a major cricket venue with the possibility of a substantial live audience.

The preliminary matches stay in Bengaluru, but the Duleep Trophy final gets a bigger stage in Chennai – primarily because the BCCI wants the fans to be part of it.
