The crisis stems from a rare Bundibugyo strain of Ebola that broke out in Ituri Province in mid-May 2026 and has since spread across eastern DR Congo and into parts of Uganda. The World Health Organization has declared it a Public Health Emergency of International Concern, with hundreds of cases reported and a rising death toll. Ongoing conflict in the region has severely hampered containment efforts.
