Jürgen Klopp has lifted the lid on Liverpool’s remarkable pursuit of Kylian Mbappé, revealing the club once flew the French superstar and his entire family aboard a luxury private jet in a last-ditch attempt to convince him to join Anfield.
Speaking to Magenta TV during France’s World Cup campaign, the former Liverpool manager described the meeting as “the most expensive non-transfer” the club ever invested in.

Liverpool’s private jet pitch to Kylian Mbappe
Klopp revealed that Liverpool owner John W. Henry and the club went all out during talks with Mbappé in 2017, when the then-Monaco teenager was Europe’s hottest prospect.
“We flew from Blackpool to Nice. In Nice, the whole Mbappé family got on board a private plane with five rooms or something.”
“It was a very big plane. We really went big. Then we flew around in a circle, talked to the family and ate good food.”
According to Klopp, the unusual setting had one purpose – keeping the meeting completely out of the public eye.
“All of this happened in the plane. We were not allowed to be seen. So we flew in a circle. It was fantastic.”
“We flew, ate, had a good time… then he went to Paris.”
Kylian Mbappe’s mother almost gave Liverpool hope
Mbappé had previously admitted Liverpool held a special place in his family’s heart because of his mother.
“I talked to Liverpool, the favourite club of my mum; she loves them.”
The France captain later confirmed the Reds were among the clubs he considered before choosing Paris Saint-Germain.
Why Mbappe rejected Liverpool
Despite Liverpool’s elaborate charm offensive, Mbappé ultimately joined PSG from Monaco in a deal worth around €180 million before eventually moving to Real Madrid in 2024.
Klopp’s latest revelation highlights just how close Liverpool came to landing one of football’s biggest stars, even if the blockbuster move never materialised.
