Why Yuvraj Singh Could Be the Perfect Mentor for Vaibhav Sooryavanshi

Yuvraj Singh knows exactly what it’s like to carry the weight of expectations as a teenage prodigy. More than two decades after bursting onto the international scene as India’s next big batting sensation, the former all-rounder now wants to help guide another generational talent – Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

Speaking to JioStar, Yuvraj revealed he would love to mentor the 15-year-old, much like he has done with India opener Abhishek Sharma.

“I have spent a lot of time training Abhishek, and I would love to spend time with Vaibhav as well. He has a great career ahead of him. He is a serious player in the making, and I believe he will get there,” Yuvraj said.

Yuvraj Singh understands teenage stardom better than most

Long before becoming India’s 2011 World Cup hero, Yuvraj was one of the country’s brightest teenage prospects.

He made his first-class debut for Punjab at just 15 before announcing himself on the global stage by winning Player of the Tournament at the 2000 Under-19 World Cup.

Just months later, he made his ODI debut for India at 18 years and 296 days before producing an unforgettable 84 against Australia in only his second international innings.

That rapid rise eventually turned Yuvraj into one of India’s greatest white-ball cricketers, winning two World Cups and establishing himself as one of the finest match-winners of his generation.

It is a journey that mirrors, in many ways, the path Sooryavanshi has begun.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi following a similar trajectory

Like Yuvraj in 2000, Sooryavanshi has broken through at an exceptionally young age.

The teenage left-hander recently made his India debut in the T20I series against England after becoming one of domestic cricket’s biggest stories. He also surpassed one of Yuvraj’s long-standing records by smashing the fastest List A fifty by an Indian during the India A tri-series in Sri Lanka, reaching the landmark in just 11 balls.

Yuvraj believes the youngster represents the next evolution of attacking batting.

“I always call myself a Terminator. Now there is Terminator 4, Abhishek Sharma, who is four times better than me. And after him comes Terminator 6, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who has evolved even more.”

“I did my part in my time, Abhishek elevated it, and now Vaibhav is setting new standards. This is the third phase of the same journey. It is great to see the sport evolving.”

Drawing comparisons with tennis, Yuvraj added: “When I watch Sinner and Alcaraz, I see how tennis is changing. I see the same evolution in Abhishek and Vaibhav.”

Abhishek Sharma is proof of Yuvraj’s influence

Yuvraj’s credentials as a mentor are already evident through Abhishek Sharma.

The left-handed opener has frequently credited Yuvraj for transforming both his game and mindset, emerging as one of India’s most destructive T20 batters under his guidance.

That success makes Yuvraj’s desire to work with Sooryavanshi even more significant, especially as India look to nurture one of the country’s brightest teenage talents.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: “Yuvi Paaji is my idol”

The admiration is mutual.

Speaking after spending time with Yuvraj at the Wimbledon men’s singles final alongside Abhishek Sharma, Sooryavanshi described the former India star as his idol.

“Yuvi Paaji is my idol too. Meeting him for the first time was a special moment. I got to spend time with him and he shared a lot of insights about the game.”

“He spoke about the mental side of the game, how to handle pressure, and the importance of believing in yourself. It feels great to have so much to learn from someone like him. I am sure it will help me a lot in my career going forward.”

Abhishek admitted he recognised exactly how the teenager felt.

“I can feel what Vaibhav is feeling right now because Yuvi Paaji is my idol as well. I remember when I first met him, it was kind of the same feeling that he’s feeling now.”

A mentor who has lived the journey

Few former cricketers understand the pressures of becoming a teenage sensation better than Yuvraj Singh.

From dominating Under-19 cricket to making his India debut before turning 19, overcoming setbacks, winning World Cups and mentoring the next generation, his career has covered every stage a young cricketer hopes to experience.

If Sooryavanshi’s development continues on its current trajectory, having someone with Yuvraj’s experience in his corner could prove just as valuable as the runs he scores on the field.
